Appreciate the listing of these places; especially for someone very out of the loop.

Is that... uh... other forum still around, in any iteration?

The one begun by .. you know.... three individuals?
Ah yes...the Triad. The original site is long gone, but a different version still exists. TFNN.NET

I wouldn't expect anyone to go elsewhere while this place is still up and running?
Pretty much. If the AT forums do face a future of certain doom, it would be nice if we received notice so we could archive some stuff and then move on in an orderly fashion. Thus far we have had no cause for concern.

All that depressing talk yet today is the 25th anniversary of this incarnation of the AnandTech forums.

Happy 25th anniversary to you 10/9/1999'ers who registered on the first day after the prior version of the forums shit the bed permanently.

I can't recall, was 10/09/99 Fusetalk or Ultimate Bulletin Board?

Pretty sure it was Fusetalk.

AFAIK you are correct, it was Fusetalk --> vBulletin --> Xenforo

Edit: Actually 10/1999 I was only a lurker, so I'm not 100% certain it was FT.

fusetalk, because I only remember fusetalk when I first started lurking and then eventually registered.

I remember the torches and pitchforks when vBulletin came around.

It's interesting because I've only ever used fusetalk on AT and Fatwallet. I wish we could revert back to fusetalk or vBulletin but I have a feeling the forums days are numbered.

If the AT forums are eventually closed, I wonder if Future plc would give us access to the database/PHP files? It would also be nice if there was a redirect https://forums.anandtech.com to the new (yet to be decided) URL.

Wasn't there a very good reason why AT forums transitioned away from fusetalk? Or was it just for Web2.0 features and social media-like like/dislike stuff (half of which we disabled for being disruptive)?

I'd buy these forums Twitter --> Elon Musk style.

Oh so you could moderate it without a political lean? Or if you like since people leaning one way think anything but that lean can't be towards center but hard right?

We already have good volunteer moderators here. No reason why that would have to change.

I waited 15 years to post this. I play the long game...

ps. I loved vBulletin. The smiley / emoji collection was the best.

VBB flubbed bad. Real bad. They had the vast majority of larger web forums at one time. They refused to listen to the customer base on a number of problems. When XF came along, VBB lost most of their web share in a matter of months and within a year or two, they had lost almost 90%

Thanks for the info, vB really dropped the ball. No wonder when Googling for Xenforo to vBulletin I found more results of the reverse (vB to XF).

Speaking of forum software I wonder what phpBB and SMF market share is compared to vB, XF and IPB.

A long time ago I actually started coding my own forum software called SquirrelBBS. Still has a trace online: https://www.warp2search.net/story/squirrelbbs-beta-released/

It became abandonware as I got too busy with school and stuff though, and just never spent as much time on it as I wanted to and got bored of it more or less. I also was a noob and did not know the concept of object oriented programming back then. The code was a mess. As I actually started learning those concepts working on different projects I ended up just never going back to that one.

Actually found screenshots here: https://www.anyf.ca/viewtopic.php?p=63331

It was actually in a semi usable state, I used it as my technical report project in college actually and got an A+. So it did serve a purpose.
