Please answer this man's question.

He was leasing a Beamer. A 30% pay cut for him probably just dropped him into the middle class bracket. Welcome to the level where the rest of eek out our existence, lol.

doubled mortgage, pay cut, and "I can't afford it"... instead of spending $5k on a reliable Honda you tie yourself up in a car payment for 3-5 years for a VW? Innnnnteresting priorities.

It's the American way.

Lots of financial advice for a car forum. He can go somewhere else for that if he wants it. Otherwise, I'll just say, congratulations on the new ride.

What kind of fuel economy is the GTI getting btw?

Have you tried looking at a Civic Si? Not as torque-y as the GTI, but more fun to drive imo.

Huge disagree. Civic Si is nice in its own right...but I would never buy it over the GTI unless I'm looking for the reliability. I've driving a 2007 Si and a 2010 GTI and the GTI is IMHO a much nicer and more fun car to drive.

He invited comments about finances when he shared them in his first post. That is how humans work; they are likely to respond to stimuli.

I bought a brand new GTI not too long ago.. it turned out to be a complete nightmare. Turbo oil seals blew out, transmission replacements, HID headlight leveling broke several times, random bulbs burning out every time I started the car, random sensors dying, more warning lights on the dash than a fighter jet about to crash, etc. Just don't keep the thing past the warranty period, because it's very expensive to repair. Mine was at the dealer getting warranty work done more than I drove it.. literally. Good luck. I got rid of mine ASAP while it still had a high resale value.

Outta curiosity -- Manual or DSG?

What year? I have a GLi (pretty much a GTi with a trunk) and only have had 1 annoying bulb that keeps burning itself out. A search on Google shows that I am not alone with that one though...lol

Test drove Mazda 3 couple of times and actually like it until I took it on the interstate. Let me just say the ride was atrocious to put up with. I guess I like the car on paper more than in real life. After driving the GTI it felt like the cars were made on two different planets.

Did you drive the normal Mazda3 or the Speed3?

Sorry you left the club. GTI is a nice car though. I had one when I was in college over 20 years ago.

manual in the Civic Si and DSG in the GTI. I prefer manual, but the DSG was very impressive in the GTI...much better than I expected. I would still option for one and I've only heard good things about the shifter in the GTI...so I'm still giving the GTI the win.

So you went from a 335i to a GTI? Ouch. That's an odd move. If you don't push the performance much, I guess daily driving duties wouldn't really show a huge difference. For GTI money though I'd have a hard time passing up a CPO G37 coupe or something of that nature.

I was skeptical about DSG until I drove a R32 with one. I was very impressed.

Its pretty hard to beat the amount of car you get for the GTI price. If you want a new car, its a great deal.

Regarding the DSG, I would avoid that IMHO. Still new tech, and $$$ to replace. Not worth-it over a standard manual if you ask me.

I got my Mazda3s touring with sunroof and 6CD for 16,500. GTI should be better at $6K more. BTW, ride on mine is great considering how good the handling is. It's communicative but not jarring, I got complements from passengers on the ride. Maybe they changed it with redesign, but I doubt it.

its not THAT new.

the mark VI gti is out, and the V had it. I drove it in the V and it was very good.

I think a lot of people who have had massive problems with GTIs were the mark IV and below. From what i've read the V and up are pretty good, the friend of mine who had one never had a problem that well he didnt personally cause to the car.

jettas though apparently are still not so great. I guess they are made in mexico and the golfs are made in germany, not sure if that is a factor, but it could be.

I loved my GTI :) Itll be fine, the MKV platform is pretty solid and the GTI is their mass seller, no one I know with one has had anything major with it. If I had a more steady job/not about to head to med school I would have bought mine out after the lease.
