Good bye 335, hello GTI!

My lease comes to an end on the BMW in two months and even the dealer gave me good price to buy it out - 26900$ (KBB is 30100$) I can't afford it anymore. My mortgage doubled recently and took a 30% pay cut at work :(. So I was looking for something I can l drive for now that won't kill my wallet and would be somewhat fun and can carry all the toys like skis, bikes etc...

Test drove Mazda 3 couple of times and actually like it until I took it on the interstate. Let me just say the ride was atrocious to put up with. I guess I like the car on paper more than in real life. After driving the GTI it felt like the cars were made on two different planets.
I thought I’m not going to find anything in my price range…until I went and test drove the 2010 GTI.
What a fun little car! I could not believe that materials inside are actually step above the one’s in my BMW.
It has an excellent handling for front wheel drive, very quiet but with nice exhaust note. I know there are some reliability concerns, but with warranty and loner cars provided by the dealer 1 mile away, I have some time to test it. My BMW was flawless in 3 years, except I got 4 flat run flats (400$ each) and 2 bent wheels (400$ each). Plus gas mileage in the city was around 18-19. 250-280 on the full tank (about 15GAL).
Anyway, I’m picking the new car tomorrow. I think I got a good deal – 2 door, premium stereo, 6-speed, blue tooth, mat kit – 22600$ including 500$ rebate (800$ under invoice according to Edmunds) + 0% for 60 months.
And the moral of the story is…if you want to buy a Mazda 3…don’t go test drive a GTI :).

I love your car, but I question your financial decision

I used to have an 08 GTI flashed to stage 1, I still miss it sometimes

Since my car payment lowered 150$ + less insurance and I use less gas = i'm happy with the results.

Oh well anyway, I've not been in a GTI in many years but I'm not surprised you found it nicer than the 3. The 3 is nice, too, but the VW's do have that German pizzaz going for them. A friend had a 1994 or 1995 vr6 gti and back in the day it was much tighter in all ways than my dad's similar-aged Maxima.

I got a rental 3 sport and it drives like my Jetta does, maybe a little rougher. No comparison to a GTI

What choice does he have, a u-u-used car? Euuu...

Or something between a Versa priced car and a Cobalt priced car...

Also, most people don't have their mortgage unexpectedly double. Fix your current financial problems before you exacerbate them, OP!

Mortgage doubled? How?

probably some sort of interest only teaser rate period, where it just reset to being a normal mortgage with an adjustable rate who knows.

and he leased a $50k car. a little speculation and just bought a new one... and people wonder why america is foreclosing houses at the rate we are.

I don't wonder. :D

Your mortgage doubles when you are on a single income all of the sudden....bmw was a lease, vw is a buy...Was looking at the use car market but with 0% financing, free maintenance, new cars were making more sense...

Be careful when you take your car into the dealer, if its a shitty one then they might just fuck your engine. All VW dealers dont have diesel techs unfortunately

well he doesnt have to worry about that . the GTI is a gas engine, you might be thinking about the TDI i'm assuming.

this new GTI should be pretty reliable at least the new GTI engine is the one that uses timing chains instead of belts so thats one less belt that could snap.

Oh fuck i was thinking about the guy that just got the golf TDI. Haha

Yeah the TSI fixes the oil consuming issue with the FSI (1qt every 5k I think) and adds a timing chain

Golf GTI? If you're going to get a nerdy car, at least get one that does not pose as a quasi sports car.

doubled mortgage, pay cut, and "I can't afford it"... instead of spending $5k on a reliable Honda you tie yourself up in a car payment for 3-5 years for a VW? Innnnnteresting priorities.

Have you tried looking at a Civic Si? Not as torque-y as the GTI, but more fun to drive imo.
