Should I buy the blackberry pearl or the dell axim x51v pda? I want a new toy and have been flirting with these two items lately. Can't afford both though :( My cellular service is through Cingular. I've wanted a new phone for a while, but the thought of renewing a contract deters me.

The only reason I'd get a BB is if my company has a BES. I do love mine, though

Hmm...if it was between the two I would go for the Blackberry. I've tried the PDA thing before and it was pretty much a glorified paper weight on my desk. One extra thing I had to carry around. At least with the Blackberry it will be multifunction.

Agreed. Also, regarding the Pearl, personally I can't stand predictive text, gotta have qwerty.

KK, why not a Blackjack or if you want to spend a little more, 8525?

Yea, I had a Sony Clie, but it was really a crappy PDA, and there wasnt much I could do with it.

Have you seen the Blackberry Pearl? It's not like the other Blackberrys, as it is marketed towards the younger crowd. It's more of a fun phone than a business phone.

i have both an x50v, and an x51v, and i bought my girlfriend an x51v too...they are really nice, and it's kind of nice how i can hook it up to my LCD TV to watch my latest TV episodes that i've downloaded off bittorret:)

but for those who don't use one often, it can be cumbersome, because you can't use it as a phone, which i assume you can do with the blackberry

my gf is a clinical pharmacist, so she carries it around the hospital for drug info

I heard the young hip crowd pops their collars, sags their pants, and wears trucker hats.

Its design doesn't mean anything. The underlying email/sync functionality is the same...which is, without a BES, nothing great.

Same goes for WinMo phones...no Exchange server, not that great.

BB Pearl. Slick phone, fast, stable, can setup BIS, amazing interface. Once you learn the keyboard shortcuts you take it to the next level and nothing comes close IMO.

With the Blackberry Internet Solution it's just the same as a BES, but works with your own email.

BUt most people don't have personal email that is so critical that they need 24/7 access.

True. I was just debunking the myth provided by the previous poster. At the same time why not have it fast? You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. :D

Not only that, but a Pearl does much more than just email, plus it looks better than 90% of phones in it's market segment.

That scroll ball is what sold me. I used it on my friend's sidekick III, and it's just amazing.

BIS for many mailservers is still just polling (of course, due to the limitations of POP). Slow as hell. It takes my gf 10 minutes to get mail from me on her BB and another 10 for it to get back. May just be her company's mailserver though, their IT is a joke. At least just about all webmail providers are set up for push with most providers. Plus, BIS is still just a one way sync to said webmail, unlike BES. And no support for filing messages. Not to mention the only things it is good for is mail...no OTA sync of PIM data.

BIS is a great step forward for consumer level Blackberry devices, but just so messy once you've used a device with BES or EAS. 3rd party BES and EAS providers are cheap, I'd personally go with it if I didn't have a BES and Exchange server at my disposal.

I will will throw in my support for the x51v. I have it and it's GREAT! easily one of the top three tech purchases I've ever made.
I can watch video on it, pulling the video off the network wireless, and I can watch those video anywhere I can access my network (if the video isn't already on my SD Card). I can watch my downloaded tv shows when and where ever I want. I can even sit in the living room and hold my wife watching my own shows on my x51v while my wife watches her tv show on TV.

it's great. Great planner, etc., too...

This is true. I have the T-Mobile Dash WinMo phone.

I used to have a Palm III, then a Sharp Zaurus, but I hardly used them. When I got a BB, I finally realized what a PDA should be - it does all the essential things you need (phone, email, web, IM, games, video, music, camera, navigation), does them reasonably well and (in the case of the Pearl) its all in a sleek, awesome little package.

Agreed. Also, regarding the Pearl, personally I can't stand predictive text, gotta have qwerty.

No, it uses a 400MHz Samsung processor. Overclock your 8125. My MDA is at 240MHz and is fast enough to handle anything save Skype.
