And your claim that golf is a game not a sport is preposterous. Golf is an athletic sport, just about all of which are games.
Totally athletic!

Eh, there are examples from all across the board

https://www.complex.com/sports/greatest-fat-athletes-all-time/

The fact he could hit a ball further than most anyone else in his prime has to be considered athletic, same as a power hitting baseball player - generating incredible club head speed
Very few of those smoke and drink beer while actually playing their sport!

If you can drink a few beers, smoke a couple of ciggies, be fat and unfit (and lets face it John is both out of shape and unhealthy) all while actually playing your sport and still be at the top of your game, then your game probably isnt an athletic sport!

What I will say...for casual golfers it may not be much of an athletic game, but anyone who makes it to the pga tour for sure is an athlete...

Eh, baseball players used to drink mid game and smoke in the dugout, do lines of cocaine... but bottom line, very very few people can swing a club 115+ mph, same as few can throw 100+mph pitch, kick 50+yrd field goals etc, they're all outliers talent wise.

The fact that he COULD drink beer and smoke and be better than 99.9% of the population reinforces the fact he had a freakish athletic talent.

Talent =/= athleticism

Just as a baseline do you consider pub darts an athletic sport?

Anyone can throw the dart to the board, that's just accuracy. The tennis player w/ the fastest server, pitcher w/ fastest pitch, qb throwing deeper than anyone else etc...it's not just accuracy, he is physically swinging the club faster than almost anyone else and combines it w/ accuracy. Hell on a good day I'll hit a lot of fairways but I'm so far back it's not even comparable. Where I might be hitting a fairway wood in to a green, a guy like Dustin Johnson is easily hitting a 9 iron.

I'm guessing you've never played a round of golf? Or very few?

Nonsense. It isn't "just" anything. Anybody can do anything if they put enough time in it, but it doesn't make it athletic. Golf especially. I'll give the pros a bit since they have to walk their asses around the course, but they still aren't humping their clubs from hole to hole. You want to make it athletic, add a time component, where they run from hole to hole, carrying their own clubs. Make an accurate shot when you're winded. Makes it strategic. "Do I want a time penalty and get a better shot, or do I want to go for raw speed to win the game?". THAT'S athleticism.

Ok, saying 'just' might have been a bit harsh, my point was the dart comparison is equal to the putting and chipping element of golf...'putting your mind to it' isn't going to let you hit a ball 300+ yards...we're talking about 4+ miles you're hitting the ball for a round- it takes an athletic swing to move the ball that far in the number of strokes the professionals do - 'anybody' can't swing 100+mph by putting their mind to it - it is an athletic move.

Which is exactly the reason there are different tee boxes for different levels of players...I just think anyone who's played with someone who is anywhere near a professional level wouldn't say it's not an athletic sport - it's pretty incredible to see someone who is even close to a scratch golfer- it's a whole different game.

So? You can see unathletic people playing football in the parks, etc. But at the highest level it's athletic.
That golf isn't an athletic sport.
Why don't you stop thread crapping here and find something worthwhile to do with yourself. You don't like golf. So what? Don't put it down. You just don't know what you're missing. I'm sure that's true of myriad other things. Tough.
Dont make me post a picture of John Daly!
It so happens that John Daly is very athletic. There are very athletic fat guys. There are kagillions of thin unathletic people. You are probably not much of an athlete if you can't appreciate the fact that how fat you are doesn't very well correlate with your athleticism. Let's be honest. Being too fat is a detriment to athleticism but it does not preclude it.

I dont mind golf, its just not my thing. I quite like darts and pool but I'm not claiming they are athletic sports.

Swinging a club is not athletic!

Then stick to what you know and don't put down on things you don't. Clearly you do not understand golf.

Saying something isn't athletic isn't putting it down.

Chess or playing the cello are not athletic but both very worthy pursuits.

You enjoy it, that's great. You don't have to pretend it's something it isn't to justify that though.

Quite true. See Kevin James, Vincent D'Onofrio.
