Goldeneye 007 is finally ported to current gen

On the 23rd of January, Goldeneye 007 was released for the Switch and XBox with some pretty staggering differences between the two. From what I read, it's "free" for the Switch but it requires the annual Nintendo expansion subscription in order to access the game and it's not on the eStore for purchase. It's also available on the XBox through the Game's Pass without the ability to buy it there as well.

The Switch version allows you to play online with other people but the game isn't updated in the slightest as the Switch is simply emulating the N64 version. I've heard about some pretty serious latency issues when playing with other people but those reports were few and far between. The XBox version has updated graphics (don't expect CoD graphics) and a smoother framerate but lacks the ability to play online with other people. So for anyone else who has been waiting for Goldeneye 007 to hit current gen, now you have to decide which is more important: online PvP matches or updated campaign graphics and better frame rate. Personally, I'd rather wait to see if it ever hits PC which seems likely since XBox received a proper remaster and these days it seems like every XBox game eventually ends up on PC anyways.

I fired it up for a little while just for nostalgia sake (on Switch fwiw). Something didn't quite seem right while I was playing; I finally realized it was the controller. As weird as it seemed, the N64 controller worked pretty well for fps. I'm sure I'd get use to the Switch Pro controller if I keep playing.

Doesn't sound like that is the case. It's not anywhere near the leaked XBLA remaster.

It is not AFAIK. They are just using emulation. Never understand the appeal of this game, I was going to PC LAN parties when this released (Quake and Duke3D, C&C Red Alert, good times). Seemed rather primitive to me.

The game hasn't aged well at all IMO and while it was incredible at the time, there are just so many better FPS games that you can play right now if you wanted to. I think people are going to be excited about this for a short while and then the interest is going to drop off drastically.

Like most older games, it's a nostalgia thing. I replayed Turok 2 and Goldeneye on one of my N64s last year and I absolutely loved them both. Sure they're wonky and clunky and nowhere near realistic (normal guards walking through a grenade explosion) but they're still fun as long as you don't go in thinking they are going to be next-gen like they were in the 90s.

I agree. I guess it appeals to the same type of player who waxes on Atari 2600 re-releases and claiming 2600 Missile Command is the greatest game ever!

I mean I think it's pretty easy to see the appeal of it back then.

Sure he was playing PC LAN parties with superior FPS games. But PC's back then were super niche and "for nerds" and were not so mainstream. And it wasn't simple (for normal folk) to setup LAN parties and lug PC's around.

Withe Golden Eye (and later Halo on Xbox) it made it much easier and streamlined for your average Joe who is a console gamer to play FPS games multiplayer, and eventually online on Xbox.

Bought the Nintendo expansion just for this, and I've played it for a few hours already. Maybe because I'm older, but I really like the fact they kept the original graphics.

To modernize the controls on the Switch version, follow above. I made reload and change weapon the same face button as the original (instead of mapping them to L or R) and it feels completely natural. Mapping them to shoulder buttons though as the guide says (optional steps) allows you to change open doors and change weapons without interrupting your aiming.
