That franchise has only been open less than 6 months, I was planning on going there soon, it's about 5 miles from here, What the issue was is you cant thaw frozen food at room temps, it has to be in a cooler, the inspector probably walked in unannounced and they had to put it out of sight fast. That being said it's FL, it's July, and it's 90 degrees by noon, bad idea. The company's response that they in fact "threw all those items away" is because they got caught, if the cook hadn't put up the video it would have been cooked and served. A list is published regularly showing what restaurants were fined, and how much that fine was, sadly, many restaurants are indeed fined in central FL..

I can't even tell you how many Facebook posts I saw about this when that video came out.. I know quite a few people that have been to that location in PO, I'm definitely never going now..

I hate buffets, period. I won't eat at em. Who knows how long that food has been sitting there.

Thing is it's about the timing, you actually want to be there when it's fairly busy, if you go and it's slow the food will be kinda dried out, I've never seen a AYCE style place throw away stuff, they'll just wait until customers come in and eventually eat it.

Never been, never gonna. I spent 8 years in the food industry ....tainted for life. Cleanest places I worked were hospitals. They were strict about sanitation. Regular restaursnts? completely depends on management.

It wasn't bad back in the 90s but last time I ever went, I saw a couple that were both wide as a refrigerator waddling side by side and I told my wife we're never coming back here again or we'll end up like those two.
Never been back

yeah. We used to go every other week or so--well, maybe not that often--in the days before it was a buffet. The steaks weren't terrible--at least to the tastes of an 8 year-old.

It was considered "decent" as far as sit-down restaurants go. Now it seems to be a few steps below Denny's, and without the quaint charm of the Waffle House.

I never make out well at AYCE places. I don't like eating large quantities of food, and that's what you're paying for. I've never had terrible food at one, but they're uniformly mediocre. I'd rather go to a diner and get a step up in quality for equal, or a bit less money.

holy crap, didn't even realize it was spaceman till you mentioned it.

I know right! I didn't notice it until I had read the thread and then gone back out again and saw him listed as the OP in the, uhm, lobby? (I'm not sure what it's called) and then went back in to reread it, suffice it to say this was my reaction

ironically his post being coherent made it more confusing to me than his usual ones.

Aside from the Sizzler buffet which I indulge in once every year or two - American buffets have been off my list of places to eat at.

Indian & Asian buffets are generally pretty good - you get what you pay for so a $25 Asian buffet loaded with seafood is quite good as is a $12 Indian buffet.

From what I've heard the buffets in Vegas are legendary, and run from the el-cheapo to the $50 type, I'd like to check that out once before I croak..

Even without maggets, Golden Coral consistently serves the most disgusting food I have ever tried to eat.

Yes, the good ones are on a totally different level compared to shitty ones like Golden Corral, but some of the cheap ones probably aren't much better..

Oh man I love Golden Corral. I can't recall a bad experience there.

I don't get the video though (haven't watched it, just read news article); it shows food by a dumpster? Um, who fuckin cares? Are they storing food outside by the dumpster or something? Then yeah that's fucked. Guess I'm missing something.

You commented about a video without watching it.. Of course you missed something.

Storing food by a dumpster outside during a health inspection is precisely what they're doing

Yeah, went there a few times (two different locations) in the late 90s and early 2000s, and thought it was pretty decent place, a definite but not huge step-up from the Hometown Buffet type of place. But we noticed it going downhill thereafter. The Golden Corral we had in Stockton CA actually closed down, not sure why.

Seems to happen to all the buffet places. There was an Old Country Buffet in Michigan that was really good back in the early to mid-90s, before I moved to CA. They were always packed, too, waiting line out the door. Went there again on a visit back to MI and it had followed the pattern of decline into mediocrity ala Hometown Buffet.

It seems the inspector caught them off guard and they were improperly defrosting or had food at kitchen temperature on a rack. It's possible the cooler was so congested that there was no way to quickly wheel it in there plus you are not supposed to have finished, cooked items and raw meat on the same storage rack, big no-no so someone front ran back and yelled "inspectors here!", it takes a few minutes for the inspector to ID him/her self and announce an inspection is going to be taking place, they used that time to wheel the cluttered racks out by the dumpster to hide them from inspection.

There is a Golden Corral that recently opened around my area in a decently affluent neighborhood. The place was packed with 1hr wait times for the first 6 months of opening. The first time I attempted going, I ended up going to BJs that's next to it to avoid the wait. I got a steak there and it was tasteless and nasty.

I went back to GC a few weeks later. The steak there was surprisingly waaay better than BJs. I realize that BJs isn't known for their steaks, but I would certainly still expect them to be better than a buffet. The steak at GC was actually flavorful, tender, and juicy.

I was expecting it to be crap, like hometown buffet, but I found it surprisingly good.

They had a few other items that was quite delish.

Vegas buffet's are not even in the same league from regular buffets but you do pay a lot of them.

For example: $40 for lunch but it's pretty damn good

You get what you pay for.

GC definately isn't $50/pp Fogo de Chao(which is more or less a buffet with service) or the $35-50(dinner) Vegas Buffets(which to me Wicked Spoon is the best).

Asia buffet where I live, they serve mostly tons of vegetables leaving you hungry after 2 hours. Beef with broccoli = 90% broccoli and 10 pieces of beef. When you pick on the beef the owner prevents you from doing it.
