When I used to workout pretty hard I hated the guys who enouraged me when I didn't want it. The "NO PAIN NO GAIN!!!" types.:disgust:

I hated that.

I guess they've gotten so far by being focused and avoiding the kind of behaviour that other show ponies engage in. Also, I'm assuming they realize that no matter how big you are, there's always someone bigger out there. This brings an air of respect where one knows how to respect the personal space of others.

It's been a very good experience for me so far. I highly recommend getting a membership, developing a routine and working out to all resident couch-potatoes and serial chillers of ATOT!

do you watch a lot of 80's movies?

Yeah, I go to the gym too. It's become so routine I almost considered it fun. Especially when there is a good looking girl in front barring it all for the world to see.

Bullies? Are you going to a gym or high school.

I see your point but are you telling me that when a bunch of guys get together for a period of intense activity, there aren't any ruffled feathers?

For some reason...I feel the above has the potential of being grossly misinterpreted by ATOT...

something's telling me you don't get out in the real world often. Either that or you're still in HS.

I have oodles of experience at many gyms. Been doing it since 1985. By and large the people who go to gyms have tremendous equanimity. They don't look down at you, they know the issues, they have seen it all if they've been at it a while, have thought it through and are cool. Of course, some are cooler than others. It's a great place and an integral part of my life.

The few times when I've gotten ticked off at someone it was usually someone with little experience in the gym. That has been rare.

Guys/girls that are on their own are generally ok and you can ask to share equipment and whatnot, but the people that workout in packs are annoying as hell.

Agreed.

THIRDED. Theres nothing I hate more than a bunch of people talking while sitting on equipment that I want to use.

If someone is just sitting on a piece of equipment and not using it I think nothing of asking them if I can use the equipment. They always surrender it in a snap. Actually, it's not very thoughtful of them to be sitting on it like that. However, thoughtlessness is common in the gym. For instance, throwing your towel or setting your water bottle on a piece of equipment that you have no intention of using. I don't show irritation, I just ask politely (reasonably politely!) and go about my business, and I do workout with quite a bit of purpose. People who do a lot of resting between sets are kind of a contrast to my style. I have a routine, and I always know what I'm going to do next. This is by no means universal. Many guys (more so than the girls) don't seem to know exactly what they want to do. Many pace back and forth like caged animals. That irritates me, but I never say anything, of course.

If you're new to the gym, you're not going to have a routine, or at least you will be searching, learning, experimenting, changing your routine, adding things, etc. There's nothing wrong with that. It's good to be thoughtful, positive, friendly and considerate. I have nothing against guys with workout partners. I don't, but I fully realize the positive aspects of it. I think the most successful gym rats (not meant to be pejorative, that term) often have workout partners.
