Going to the gym

I'm a bit surprised in that there are no real bullies/browbeaters picking on lesser souls.. at least where I go and it's a pretty big place. In fact, some of the largest guys seem to be the most civil and accommodating when it comes to sharing equipment. I guess they've gotten so far by being focused and avoiding the kind of behaviour that other show ponies engage in. Also, I'm assuming they realize that no matter how big you are, there's always someone bigger out there. This brings an air of respect where one knows how to respect the personal space of others.

It's been a very good experience for me so far. I highly recommend getting a membership, developing a routine and working out to all resident couch-potatoes and serial chillers of ATOT!

uh, they got big by focusing on their workout while at the gym. unless they have puffy chipmunk cheeks and sideways hats and backne, in which case they're probably just there to chat while the 'roids make them bigger

Yeah bullies wth are you talking about.

Even in high school I don't remember bigger kids picking on small ones in the gym at least.

I have only once seen a bully at a gym and that was in college. But even then i think it was more to try to impress a bunch of hot girls who were working out. needless to say it didnt work out to well for him.

I have found most of the big guys (ones who work out on a regular basis) are pretty cool about shareing and helping.

when i was going all the time i was maybe 5'6 and 155 one guy i would work out with a lot was 6'5 and maybe 250 or so. he was fucking huge (found out latter he played on NIU's football team) but he was always nice to everyone.

you gotta remember this is real life and not TV.

Bullies? Are you going to a gym or high school.

I see your point but are you telling me that when a bunch of guys get together for a period of intense activity, there aren't any ruffled feathers?

For some reason...I feel the above has the potential of being grossly misinterpreted by ATOT...

Well, there was this one time.......I mean........ 😱

I've been going to gyms for 20 years and I've never seen a bully at one. Even the roughest muscle head gyms.

I'm glad you're having a positive experience at the gym, that's important, as you'll keep going that way. Good luck! 🙂

You're much more likely to encounter clowns at the gym than bullies. Fortunately they usually aren't regulars.

I've never seen bullies at the gym. Annoying douchebags by the dozens, but not bullies.

I really keep to myself, do my thing, and get the hell out, but some people seem to like to stand around, socialize, and preen in the mirrors, which I don't really get. Guys/girls that are on their own are generally ok and you can ask to share equipment and whatnot, but the people that workout in packs are annoying as hell.

Oh and stay off your damned cellphone.

KT

Edit: Meant to say congrats on heading to the gym. Hope it stays positive and you keep it up!

Ok, I guess it doesn't really exist but I for some reason had this impression.

I think bullies was the wrong word....as I have never seen any at my gym. Lots of big ego's, but everyone minds their own business for the most part.

Are you serious?

nobody starts shit at a gym. its the musclehead sanctuary...even douches don't bring the fight into their own homes.

I didn't know guys went to the gym together...I go alone...

I prefer going with other people, just because I know I can't quit till they quit...that and I'm really competitive and will push myself quite hard in front of others, so it is a better workout for me

Also I have never encountered a bully in the gym, actually my university gym doesn't even have many d-bags which is really nice

Eh? Sometimes I go with two other people and we just work in sets on say, the squat rack. I think this is much more efficient than one person doing all his sets (taking rest/water breaks inbetween), and then passing off to another solo person (I see this a lot where strangers don't tend to ask to work in sets and just wait for the person before them to leave the rack/machine).

@ the OP, congrats on starting to go to the gym, and I've never seen any bullies either. The bigger people actually tend to be the nicest/most helpful? Gym is a place to work, not flaunt egos.

If you are using the machine, its different. Its the groups that wait 5 minutes between each of their sets to go that bother me. It shouldn't take more than 10 minutes for each person to do 1 set. If you are each doing 3 sets and taking the machine up for a half hour, there is a problem.
