I'm driving from the Bay Area...

Plan to stay in LA for one night, go to Joshua Tree NP in the morning and then to Tucson, AZ to stay for a night. And then straight to TX. Anything else I'm missing on the way on I-10??

LOL QFT!

I doubt you'll be able to drive from Tuscon to College Station in one sitting without multiple drivers.

This thread is a repost. I remember someone doing the exact same thing earlier this summer. What are you doing in College Station?

14 hours of absolutely nothing. between el paso and san antonio there is nothing at all. you might as well sleep and just leave your car on cruise control.

um, that sucks. Is it wise to take detours and not take I-10 the whole way? I will have a GPS.

It turns to 80mph (during the day, 65 @ night) somewhere on I-10 after El Paso, but shuts off around Kerville, TX.

It is 681 miles from El Paso to College Station.
It is 802 miles from LA to El Paso.

Enjoy the suckfest that is west Texas. Swing by San Angelo and drink with all the alcoholic Airmen at Goodfellow AFB.

try this route, only 24 hours

what's along the way?

Not all that much - I wouldn't go out of your way to see odessa.

I would go out of your way to see Big Bend, the big national park, but it August you'd probably die there.

Be careful around fort stockton, I got a speeding ticket there at dusk (I was doing 80, speed limit is 80 day/ 65 night, they called it night and wrote me up).

You could stop in Van Horn at Chuy's Restaurant for the "John Madden Haul of Fame".
There are historical Forts, Fort Davis and the Fort Lancaster ruins near Sheffield.
The big ass Davey Crockett statue in Ozona.
The Tower of the Americas in San Antonio.

Dude - of all the things in San Antonio, you say the Tower of the Americas?

If you do intend to sightsee while in SA, go to the Alamo and Riverwalk ... the Tower is nothing special, just a tall building. As for must-stops, I suggest stopping at Buc-ee's about an hour out of SA - clean restrooms and Dr. Pepper Icee's ... mmmmmm

I liked the Tower, it was cool to see the whole city from that high.
The riverwalk isn't that great, The Alamo is cool but can be a pain to get to.

Buc-ee's =:thumbsup: as far as gas stations go.

Buc-ee's is a must-stop for myself and my fiancee on our way back from San Antonio (to Houston.) They have insanely nice restrooms, and the hot food you can get is better than most. Overall, it's really a good place to stop if only once on your way between the two cities to stretch out.

Haha, yeah, I stopped at the Buc-ee's a few times myself traveling between here (Houston) and San An.

San Antonio is a good town, try to time it so you roll in around dinnertime and eat on the riverwalk. maybe hit that Alamo while your there, just to see it.
