Going to step-sons 8th grade "graduation". Help me.

Sadly, that just might be the case one day. Apparently millennial have a larger narcissistic streak than previous generations, which means a lot of mothers wanting to show off their kid's first pimple to show their kid is out-developing the other kids.

I had a graduation LAN party, though my friends and I were pretty nerdy.

Sure, at an end-of-year party, you mill around etc., while a ceremony is structured, and gives time to recognize, celebrate, and remember every child.

I guess it gets more diluted with bigger schools, but at the early ages especially, the schools can be small, and every kid can be known by everyone.

Just came from both -- a ceremony and a party, and it's no contest -- in the party the parents talk about their kids with other parents directly, and about other things like homes, work, politics, etc., and the kids go off to play by themselves as usual, while the ceremony was entirely focused on the kids ----- where we got to see every one of them do and say something, and see how far they've come with pictures and videos.

If you couldn't spare the time or thought for a graduation, or thought that it was unnecessary because they haven't accomplished anything and are not worth the time and trouble, maybe it's your school or parenting which is lacking?
 
Enjoy your time there as best you can. You might be surprised and actually have fun if you keep good company or find someone to talk to that you click with.
 
This is the result of Baby Boomers running these schools and bringing their hippie bullshit to the masses. My wife and I were both passed off about it with our daughter recently. For her it was just another social occasion.
 
Late to this, but all three of our daughters had "middle school graduation" at the end of 8th grade. I thought it was stupid then, and I think it's stupid now. I don't know how it got started, or why, but I think there is a significance to graduating after 12th grade, i.e. you're actually done. You don't have to go on to college. You are marking the end of childhood (or should be).

Now, get off my lawn.

No, it sounds like he is the only sane person living in the house. It is an expectation that a kid goes to each grade in sequence, until they graduate from high school.

This "gold star" for every kid regardless of their effort or success only feeds the entitlement that is destroying this country.

Like getting paid $15/hour for working at some fast food joint, NO, you are not entitled to $15/hr when your effort is only worth $5/hr (if that)
