Going to California. What place I have to visit?

There's hardly anything to see at Sacramento, except crimes at bad areas and the centre of politics for California.

However, there's a lot to see at San Francisco. There are beaches (better than Sac's), alcatraz, Catalina, etc. There are other places to visit, but I forget at the moment. There are also some crazy areas of San Francisco if you're interested. :Q Just be careful there, though. 😛

Edit: Check out Hot Chick's list. She has some of what I was trying to remember. 😀

Drive through the Presidio in SF. Pier 39 and fisherman's wharf. Lombard (duh) walk down market street and make friends w/ a bum. Ice Skating near the embarcadero. Drive throught the goldengate in the wee hours of the morning 🙂 Not too much I know of Oakland, except Jack London square. Wanna see some hot spoiled mama's? Go to Walnut Creek and check out Broadway Plaza 🙂

If you're in Oakland my favorite thing to do is get up in the hills and take a short hike on one of the beautiful trails. There are some incredible views from up there. If your not up to a little hike then just take a drive down Skyline Drive and you'll still get the views and you could stop at Chabot Science Center and look through one of their enormous telescopes for free.

For eating and shopping the areas to hit are Piedmont Avenue (where I live) and Rockridge (College Avenue).

Berkeley is also right next door as well with Tilden Park up in the hills, a couple small but nice rock climbing spots closer to downtown, of course Telegraph Avenue, and the Marina.

In San Fran I wouldn't waste time with Lombard or Fisherman's Wharf. Things that stand out for me are the Palace of Fine Arts which also houses the Exploratorium, the Sony Metreon, Haight Street, Twin Peaks, and Alcatraz is a great trip if you can swing it. Check out some clubs at night too.

....and don't waste any time in Sacramento either.

Here, I'll redo your trip for you:

You're coming into CA through Reno. That means you're going to be coming over 80 towards Sacramento.

You'll need chains going through the mountains. If you like Skiing, I suggest you stay at one of the many ski areas near lake tahoe. After skiing, drive straight to San Francisco. it's only two or three hours, and you can skip Sacramento completely (it's boring anyway). There are plenty of Touristy places in SF to visit. Golden Gate Park, Ghiradelli square, Alcatraz, etc. Pick some that you find interesting. From Sacramento Drive South to Monterey. In Monterey you should visit fisherman's wharf, and the aquarium. If you're rich and like golf, play a round at Pebble Beach or something 🙂. After Monterey, drive south on 1 (coast road) and you'll spend a couple hours along the big sur coast (one of the most spectacular coastlines you'll ever see). After you get past the Santa Lucia mountains, tour Hearst Castle, then drive down to Santa Barbara. Stay the night there and then head towards LA.

Someone else can give you stuff to do sown south, I haven't spent much time down there, but if you ask anyone from Nor. Cal, I thinkthey'll agree that I put together a pretty good tour 🙂

Pretty good indeed 🙂 But I only wish I can get from tahoe to SF in 2-3 hours, hehe

Once you get past Auburn or so, it's 85mph all the way. You just can't do it during rush hour.

Sacramento? lol. Don't waste your time there.

I second that.. unless you want to see how our dysfunctional government works, there's nothing else there to see.

If you are going to San Francisco, drive up Highway 1 to visit Point Reyes. There's a nice little bistro/restaraunt there; I forget the name, but it's right by the hippie clothing store. Wonderful food, beautiful views, and a generally awesome town.

Rob

I think your talking of Alice's in Half Moon Bay.. Am i right?

point reyes is up north of the bay, in either marin or sonoma county (can't remember). half moon bay is a great place to visit too though.

aww..why not southern california?
as for reno, sac, oakland, SF.....for SF...there's tons of places...the exploritoriom and walking the golden gate...alcatraz....u'll probably have ur most fun in SF than anywhere else....

Hi All,

I'm going to California and Nevada during Christmas back.
I will visit Reno, Sacramento, Oakland, and SF.
Any Idea what can I see over there?

Thanks.
Reno- Harrahs Car Museum... sweet machines
Sac- Old Town / Sutter's Fort... view the rationalization of the subjugation of the indigenous people of California < sorry inner dialoge
Oakland- Jack London Square / Chinatown cool resturants and peoplewatching/ Alameda Hornet Aircraft Carrier then take the Ferry over to
SF - Exploratorium or MOMA then Beach Chalet for Dinner and BEERS .
If you don't go from Oakland to SF via the ferry, go to Marin / Saualito for Lunch/Dinner and take the ferry....
Ok .. the line forms to the right for those wishing to make "FAIRY" jokes....

San Luis Obispo (nice cute town)
What chu talkin' bout?! We be bad ass mofo's in this here town! Better not be steppin' on my turf or imma break my foot off in your ass!

Seriously it's a nice little town ... and it is pretty small (though not nearly as small as it's neighbors) but it's got some great places to eat if you end up passing by around lunch or dinner time. Especially on Thursdays...

You should catch a Lakers game at the Staples Center.

Or you can go see a Kings game if you like watching inferior basketball. 😀
Inferior? Hahaha they are 7 and 1/2 games in front of the Lakers.

BTW, why visit Oakland?

Catalina? That's in SoCal. Beaches in Sacto? There's no Beaches in Sacto.

On my only visit to the Bay area I got the earliest flight I could out of DC and arrived in San Francisco around 9:30 AM PST. I then dropped my stuff in my hotel room and headed straight for Yosemite. IIRC it was around a 180 mile drive through some gorgeous country. Yosemite itself was just beautiful and I only wish I could have spent more than a couple of hours there but even that was worth the drive for me.

Aaaaaah! You're right, Red Dawn. Wasn't this like my last post last night? I was beat! LOL!

Just ignore me there. It must be having nothing to do at Sacramento and dreaming of something real some day. 😉

Pecel, others have it right. Go with their suggestions. If you don't mind going a little off your track, you can visit Yosemite Park and Lake Tahoe. They're nice places to consider during the winter.

Even without traffic (which there will always be) I highly doubt Tahoe to SF, especially South Lake Tahoe, can be done in 2-3 hours. I think the shortest amount of time it took me was just under 4 hours.

Otherwise I'd be skiing and snowboarding every day 🙂

I've made South Lake Tahoe from Oakland in almost exactly 3 hours....I've also had it take longer. 2 hours just isn't going to happen though.

The problem is that its winter here, so even nifty attractions like Monterey are colder than a witch's...ahem!

Southern California is still warm. If you come north, don't come for any outdoorsy attractions.
