Going to California. What place I have to visit?

Hi All,

I'm going to California and Nevada during Christmas back.
I will visit Reno, Sacramento, Oakland, and SF.
Any Idea what can I see over there?

Thanks.

Disney Land, Univesal Studio, Magic Mtn, PCH drive down, San Franscico.. Sunset Strip, Getty Musesum, San Luis Obispo (nice cute town), San Jose (kneel before AMD HQ).

There is lots to do out here.. depends on what you want to do.

If you are going to San Francisco, drive up Highway 1 to visit Point Reyes. There's a nice little bistro/restaraunt there; I forget the name, but it's right by the hippie clothing store. Wonderful food, beautiful views, and a generally awesome town.

Dude, he's nowhere near LA. 🙂
Of course, he could always make the drive down here.

Run!!! 😀

has anyone else noticed that streets names "MLK" usually run through really bad parts of town?

You should catch a Lakers game at the Staples Center.

Or you can go see a Kings game if you like watching inferior basketball. 😀

"MLK stood for non-violence. I don't care where you are in America, if you are on MLK, there's some violence going down." 😀

Don't come to California. There is nothing to do, nothing to see and it is extremely dangerous due to the thousands of street gangs.

Stay home where it is safe and just send your money to Gray Davis. He will have fun for you.

I think your talking of Alice's in Half Moon Bay.. Am i right?

Reno has casinos, indoor smoking, some golf courses, the usual. It's a smaller version of Vegas, with abundant free parking.
Sacramento's tourism increased 4% since last year, dunno how that happened. Tourists come to Sac to see Old Sacramento, Railroad Museum... Not much to see in the Winter. If you have some money, you can buy some Kings tickets.
Oakland has the Raiders, UC Berkeley, Some hills, golf courses in the hills...
San Francisco has the wharf, the Niners, some more golf courses, some clubs, etc... If you could, drive up or down the PCH for some really nice views and visit some nice places. You can drive to wine country and try some wine? 🙂
In the last month, I've driven from Sacramento to LA, on I5, and each way takes about 5 hrs going at 85-90 MPH, with one break for gas/piss/rest/etc. Everyone goes fast and if you don't you'll get passed by the bigrigs.

It's the complete opposite direction.

Planning to spend your whole trip driving, eh? Check out the Fetzer Winery if you're interested in that (though you're picking a lousy time to come through the vineyard country, winter. If you do SF, check out the Gheredelli Square area, Pier 39, etc. Golden Gate Park and the Palace of Fine Arts is a must see, and you might like the Exploratorium there.

Here, I'll redo your trip for you:

You're coming into CA through Reno. That means you're going to be coming over 80 towards Sacramento.

You'll need chains going through the mountains. If you like Skiing, I suggest you stay at one of the many ski areas near lake tahoe. After skiing, drive straight to San Francisco. it's only two or three hours, and you can skip Sacramento completely (it's boring anyway). There are plenty of Touristy places in SF to visit. Golden Gate Park, Ghiradelli square, Alcatraz, etc. Pick some that you find interesting. From Sacramento Drive South to Monterey. In Monterey you should visit fisherman's wharf, and the aquarium. If you're rich and like golf, play a round at Pebble Beach or something 🙂. After Monterey, drive south on 1 (coast road) and you'll spend a couple hours along the big sur coast (one of the most spectacular coastlines you'll ever see). After you get past the Santa Lucia mountains, tour Hearst Castle, then drive down to Santa Barbara. Stay the night there and then head towards LA.

Someone else can give you stuff to do sown south, I haven't spent much time down there, but if you ask anyone from Nor. Cal, I thinkthey'll agree that I put together a pretty good tour 🙂

Hmmm, I'll be heading over to LA for some meetings from Jan. 2 to Jan. 8. Any places near LA for me to visit? What college campuses are near LA? And how much is car rental over in the West Coast? First time I'm heading west of Texas.
