How much is the trip costing you?

A Lot, but I've worked very hard the past couple years with no real vacations (car trips, but not much of anything else). It'll b my first real vacation since I bought a house. About $1300 pp not including tips, drinks, casino visits, other excursions. I'm paying for part of my GF's trip, but not all. It's 9 days so I think it's worth it

hehe, I might just send out some postcards from there.

I liked the "I'm in Hell, wish you were here" ones... You can get them postmaked from there - there's a post office.

Bring cash. Lots of cash. We about ran out of money during our 7-day trip.

Which ship are you on?

Everything onboard is credit based. We usually only take a couple hundred for use in the casino and baubles on shore.

Don't ever leave anything in your room. ever. you cuold be on the most classy ship and something could get stolen. we always put our laptop, phones, extra cash in the safe provided in the cabin. its better to be safe than sorry!

How much do they charge for the safe, per day?

of those islands, we've only been to Grand Cayman. The water is the saltiest anywhere which is quite interesting if you swallow any during snorkeling. That was fun though because there's an actual wreck below near the port for you to check out. We also did some exploring on our own... walked along the beach so far we had to take a taxi (van) back.

We're going to Eastern Caribbean on Royal Caribbean this time (1st week of Sept) for our 1st anniversary (proposed on a ship in the Western Caribbean). Will be fun... I love cruises. Hope you enjoy yours. Eating at all hours of the day is heaven.

was free when we went on Princess. I couldn't fit my laptop in there so I left it out on the desk with no incident. I put (hid) the engagement ring in the safe though. 😉

I hope it's free on my cruise!

When you left it at the front desk, were there any issues with hours? Like maybe you came back from drinking one night and wanted to hop online but the front desk was closed so you couldn't get your laptop?

Which ship are you going to be on?

By the way, SHIP HAPPENS! 😛

I've been on two cruises now for a really low price thanks to Marriot rewards, hopefully an Alaska one sometime soon 🙂

Oh yeah, they make lots of money on drinks, you can try carrying things that are clear in an ... umm... botella de agua? 😛

I wonder how easy it is to get away with. My travel agent (who went on the same tour I am going on, last year) said that since there are so many stops in Italy and wine can be found everywhere, we should just go buy them at each stop and enjoy them on board. I don't want to get in trouble though carrying on wine. If they confiscated it, it'd be only $10-20 lost but that's still money.

Seems like a lot of people are going in the near future. Is it because of the low prices during hurricane season?

I'll be on the RCCL Voyager of the Seas.

Are you allowed to bring alcohol on the ship? I was planning on buying some stuff at the ports and bringing it onboard to save some dinero. Do they not allow that?

I believe you can do wine, but any hard liquor is held by the ship until the last night, when it is delivered to your room. The same goes for any bottles of alcohol purchased onboard the ship.

All are good for snorkeling.

Bring extra life preservers were long overdue for a rogue iceberg or torpedoing.

My parents are going on a cruise with us in January and my Mom asked if it was OK to wear her life preserver all the time while on board.

I second Stingray City in Grand Cayman, I did that in April on my cruise and it was pretty fun. The captain of the boat I went out on was pretty cool, he took a few minutes after the snorkeling to snag some conch shells so we could have some souvenirs.

A little known fact is that you should tip the operators of whatever tours/excursions you go on. They get paid very little and depend on tips to survive.

that reminds me, you are requested to tip your:

waiter/waitress
maid/guy who cleans up your room
maitre d

there may be others as well that i can't remember. they have suggested amounts but everything must be in cash so make sure you bring some or have a way to get some. i can't remember if there was an atm on our ship.

I have been on RCCL and we tipped via credit card. At the end of the trip, they give you a number of slips where you write down the name of the person and how much you would like to tip.

Holland America automatically bills your shipboard account everyday for $10.

BTW, you should tip:

Steward
Waiter
Assistant Waiter
and they say the Maitre D, but I disagree.

I'd rather tip the people who provided the service, IMHO. Also, at the end of the trip we usually tip our favorite waiters/waitresses from the bars onboard, usually $20. Those people bust their butts and they deserve some recognition.

I'll keep that in mind. I've worked as a waiter back in the day so I am usually a slightly above average tipper.

The one thing i stress to everyone going on a cruise is to leave the ship as soon as you get back to port. Royal Carribean gives your luggage a colored tag and you supposedly can't leave the ship until they call your color.

On my one and only cruise we were the last group off and there were a few people around us who missed their flights. The staff said to those people "if you had an early flight you should have gotten off earlier"

The bags all get taken off at the same time and piled up by color.
