Going all in with Ubuiqiti

I've been running a Unifi AC LR AP for quite some time now. I had been using a Linksys WRT3200 for routing duties. It finally took a crap and bought a Ubiquiti USG. Lots of folks were steering me to an Edgerouter but I like the Unifi interface and went with it. Had some initial issues getting it adopted as I run my controller in the cloud on Amazon AWS.

Since I got it up an running it's been flawless. Tonight finished setting up my home security cameras with dynamic dns (even using a non stock supported service) and forwarding needed ports. All very very simple using the Controller software. Being able to make adjustments anywhere in the world should problems arise while I am away in great. I am completely sold.

No, I'm not using advanced functions but for a home user this stuff is great. For a total price of less than higher end consumer routers I have a secure, reliable and higher preforming setup for less money. It does take some more work and a Netgear or Linksys but the end result is awesome. (also am loving the deep packet inspection) Once funds allow I will be replacing my switches with Unifi gear as well, mainly to put my cameras on a VLAN.

How many Port forwards can you do with that router

Not sure the limit or if there is one. Only did four for my cameras. Need to do a couple for my NAS and Xbox but other than that don't think I'll need any more.

Seems like most routers have a limit of 20 due to memory restraints. Wasn't sure on this one

Given it is geared towards business class that would surprise me. I'll so some looking and see what I can find.

I have 19 right now. I would like to add a few more cameras so I may need more.

Really, it is just a question.

And, what is the cost to host the controller on AWS?

Free for a while. Not sure exactly once the free tier runs out but guessing around $8/month for a simple home network. Will likely buy a cloud key once the free time runs out. I think it is six months.

You don't need to run a hosted controller instance to get access from anywhere. If you run some *nix at home, you can leverage their "cloud" service absolutely free. Running the controller on windows doesn't support cloud access at the moment. They also have a little controller on a stick..their CloudKey, which is a dedicated bit of HW to run their controller on. If you lose your ISP, it won't matter if your controller is still reachable or not other than it telling you your site isn't reachable. If you have multiple sites however, that's a different story.

I run the USG, two US-8-150 PoE switches, 3x AP AC Pros, and the cloud key. Also have a phone. While not everything is there that you'd expect from "enterprise" targeted gear, it's better than it was even six months ago. Development is slow, but active. And their support community is pretty strong.

Which USG you guys get? the entry one?

I really would like some DPI!
Yeah the small one. For home use I didn't see any point in the big one especially considering noise concerns as it lives in my living room. The DPI works very well. Still not perfect but pretty eye opening. The kids rack up on serious youtube and netflix bandwidth!

Now I am dead set on a switch even though my unmanaged is doing fine, debating how big I want to go.
