Goin to New Orleans !

Me and my GF are looking at vacation options. We live in Memphis, and I thought since New Orleans was so close, we could maybe try going there.

Budget is kinda tight...but if we splurge anywhere it would be the hotel.

So, on to the questions:


where to stay ?

where to party ?

where to go durring the day's ?

where to go durring the nights ?

and best of all.... WHERE TO EAT ??

where to stay: anywhere close to the French Quarter. I went there for Mardis Gras / Spring Break 2 years ago, and we stayed in the Mariott. it was only a 5 minute walk from Bourbon St.

where to party: depends on how old you are. Bourbon Street was awsome, but it was spring break and we were all in college / early-20's. it's also hella touristy. if you're looking for something more sedate, check out some of the 21+ clubs.

where to eat: everywhere. I've been craving creol food every since that trip... I'd kill for a good cajun restaurant in driving distance.

Glad you are splurging on Hotel, stay as close or in the Quarter as you can.

I hate to burst Louisiana's Tourism bubble but they know they have a serious crime problem. At least one shooting a day down here going on right now with three shot last night. They have the Police running triple shifts but still can't keep up.

Daytime you're pretty much OK but at night stay as close to the Tourism area as you can, stay in well lit areas with as much people around as possible. There should be a heavy Police presence in the Quarter itself.

There is food of all kinds depending on your taste and budget. Same goes for partying but stay to the west side of the quarter for more mainstream fun, East end towards the Cathedral gets into the Gay, S/M kind of stuff.

You can have a lot of fun here but there has been no "trickle down" Economics to the lower classes of Society so the natives are more than restless, they are desperate.

funny...last night I searched for "New Orleans" and that thread was, of course, returned. I read it, and somehow thought I saw a timestamp of 2000 instead of 2004.

There's a little mom & pop liquor/grocery store near the convention center, and since open container is legal, buy a pint and mix your own.

Do bars charge extra high prices for soda to compensate ?

Haha, made a tragic mistake while you were in the Big Easy, did ya?

My family stayed on Tolouse St, a couple blocks from Bourbon. Fun time, not really a family venue, but it was still an enjoyable vacation.

Cant mix your own in the bars (unless your sneaky ). I pay the bar prices when in the bars. but when on the streets (which is alot in N.O.) you can save a few bucks.

As far as eating, I'll second anywhere. Anyplace I tried was great - NOLA, Red Fish Grill, Bubba Gumps, Galatoires, Court of Two Sisters... it's all good.

Like others said, get a Hotel in the Quarter. Makes it much easier and it is well worth the added expense. The Quarter is pretty large so it is not just a few streets here and there, you can spend all day walking around it and still miss stuff.

I would suggest buying some travel guide like Frommer just so you have a quick and easy map for the trolly services.
Also I would not worry about crime too much, I have felt pretty safe the handful of times I have been there. During the day it is like any other large city, and at night in the Quarter they have tons of peace officers all over the place.
You can't go wrong with most resturaunts in the Quarter. Mind you, though, for dinner you may pay a premium for the tourism factor but I have never been massively disappointed.

In New Orleans, public intoxication is not only accepted but highly encouraged.

Make sure you grab a breakfast at Cafe du Monde . . . or snack or anytime of the day.

Don't forget to visit Cafe Du Monde for some coffee and beignets. Pat O'Briens is pretty cool, if you're in to piano bars.

I was there once and sadly I can't remember a damn thing about the city. I remember that it was fun the first trip down Bourbon street but I don't remember the trip back down the street. Too many bars. Be sure to hit the first bar on the left and choose from a billion different daqs.

Krispy Kreme opened up across the street from the Beignet place in the Quarter last year and a couple of weeks ago the Krispy Kreme closed down due to lack of business. The Beignet place stomped them totally!!! :thumbsup:
