God I just saw a dell commercial that pissed me off

Two characters. A manager and an IT technician. Manager says to the IT tech that they need to keep the computers going and that they cant afford new ones. The tech dude says dont worry, and pulls out duct tape. "with my upgrades, nobody will know the difference" Then they show all kinds of TRS80's and Apple IIe's duct taped with 5 inch floppy drives. The commerical makes fun of the sereotypical IT guy and the regular cubicle workers say "I wish we had just gotten Dells"

For large companies, throwing out computers makes sense. Its more cost effective than upgrading. Small companies dont have this luxury and upgrades are vital. I go through this same crap at work all the time. People complain about their computers, and I can usually upgrade them under a "consumables" budget. "capital" requests are next to impossible though.

there are few things at work I hate more than busting my nuts to get someone their 700 duron and SDram pulled for an XP2000 and 512 DDR, only to hear a week later that the computer is a "spit and tape piece of sh!t" and that they wish they had dells. Ya know what happens when your eMachine or Dell looses its power supply??? You don't have a computer until the next order goes out because those powersupplies are damn near irreplacable!!!

From your post, I would guess that you are the stereotypical IT guy.

I have never fixed a comptuer by mummifying it in duct tape. fvck yourself.

Further proving my point. You have the social skills of a malnourished tape worm.

That was not what he meant. Take a few Midol and step away from the keyboard.

Wow, I don't watch much TV but I saw this ad maybe 3 weeks back. Yeah, it's retarded... but then so are the people it's meant to appeal to.

Sounds to me like you're the one that sucks... Dell sucks too - but I'd rather have a new crappy Dell than a hacked together piece.

Replacing entire computers is almost always a better deal for companies every 2-4 years (as long as they get bottom to medium of the line) since they can donate the old computers for a tax write-off.

I thought it was a funny commercial, though, since Dell seemed to be trying to say that those who know the least about the computers should be making the computer purchasing decisions.

Get your panties out of a bunch. Jesus.
You're ranting as if the commercial said "Dell wants to congratulate acemcmac on being a total wanker."

Elaborate on this.

1) Why do I suck? :| Wtf is that? Are you twelve?
2) "rather have a crappy Dell than a hacked together piece"

I guess you don't use a custom built computer? You don't think computers, custom built by technicians with years of experience in performance computing, with hand picked parts of the highest quality are virtually gaurenteed to be more reliable and better machines? In the event of a disaster, you even have newegg's amazing RMA service to fall back on... Have you ever called in for service on a Dell or eMachine with a propriatary power supply or motherboard?

Oh, and Gurk: I probably wouldn't have caught it either if I didnt have my AIW open on my leftmost monitor when I was writing my report.

Nonsense like this just pisses me off.... brainwash the masses with disinformation and leave the "family computer guy" or "the computer guy at work" to have to clear the air. Now CNN is talking about the evil spyware that steals your social security number.... when will people actually want to understand these plastic and silicon boxes they spent so much money on....

LMAO. Spoken like 19 year old intern working for a teeny-tiny shop and taking night classes at DeVry.

Once you've got more than 5 PCs in your enterprise, it pays to get them all from one place. You know those "proprietary" parts you keep whining about? They really aren't proprietary. But who cares? You keep a couple GX150s locked up in the storage room and when one of these irreplaceable "proprietary" parts fails, you just vulch parts from the spare machines and then RMA them to Dell when it's convenient.

You seem to think that building computers is some dark art.
It's not. It's just plugging cards in slots. What are these "technicians with years of experience in performance computing?" You're not building big fat overclocked gaming machines. You just want computers that allow people to do their jobs with minimal downtime.

0wn3d

are you guys even breathing? How could you have found anandtech unless you even remotley cared about this?

Do you get this worked up over Nic Burns 'The Computer Guy' sketches on SNL?

Calm down...it's a commercial and it's poking fun at someone. No biggie.

While I'll agree Dell makes good sense for businesses, it doesn't make the commercial any less moronic. Plain & simple, the commercial is meant to make stupid people feel like they know something about computers. Since the majority of people don't, and are suggestible, it makes sense to run this kind of commercial. And seriously, nobody older than about 13/14 thinks "0wn3d" is a good insult
