Nothing wrong with kipping pull-ups. More power is produced, which is the goal. Right now I can do about 3 reps kipping, so 20 reps kipping would be a big improvement. I don't think I could get 20 strict in a year, but that doesn't mean I won't try 🙂

20 strict pull ups is a feat rarely completed by many people. They really half ass their pull ups already! Not straightening out at the bottom, not going all the way up. It's a joke.

It's better to set realistic goals that are achieveable imo. Too many people set unrealistic goals and fail. This other forum I go to, the guys will probably never achieve what they set out in that year.

I agree that they are quite different, and that strict ones are much harder. That's why I should have specified that my goal was 20 kipping pullups, as 20 dead-hang would be a bit much to tackle in a year (for me, at least). But upping my kipping pullups will allow me to also up my strict pullups as well, so it's good all around.

I wasn't referring to that but most people are not realistic in their goal settings at all. Another forum people have put down insane goals that they WILL NOT meet in 18months let alone a year. They will probably fail after 2yrs also.

It depends what your lifting and for how many years.

E.g. if your doing 150/200/240 you will more then likely not edge 180/240/290 in that year. If you do then fair play but it a massive gain to 20% on your lifts per year 'each' year.

People have to set realistic goals for the long term gains. People over extend their goals.

We will see how they do in the coming 11months 🙂.

This guy thinks he can Snatch 100kg within a year. That will be an unlikely goal within 2yrs let alone one year imo. It takes an obscene amount of training to get near that for his strength levels.

revised goals:

squat 315 for 3 sets of 5 reps
bench 225 for 3 sets of 5 reps
deadlift 405 for 1 sets of 5 reps

I deadlifted 315 for 1 set of 3 followed quickly by another 2 reps. There was a long enough pause that it wasn't quite 5 reps, but I"m sure I'll get it next time.

The DL % is insane! You will have to squat quite a lot more then that to get 405 for one rep let alone 5reps! I'd say a solid 380lbs for 5reps to get near that DL for 5reps.

Your 1RM would be at least 450lbs btw and that is rock solid!

Right now I am focusing on exercising 3-5 times a week. Still figuring out WHAT exercises I want to focus on. Right now its just pushups/squats/dips/crunches. I'll probably do some running when the weather gets better.

An entire year of exercising would be a first for me.

That's what I would like to do.

I'm 6'4", 165 lbs. 25 years old.

Dude, I don't buy that that I need to be/look big. I'm well within the 'healthy' Body Mass Index range. I DO expect to gain some weight through muscle gain. Weight is simply not an issue that I focus on. My goal is to be healthy/fit.
 
BMI is a poor indicator of fitness, IMO. And you said yourself that, based on your goal of becoming healthier, you will gain weight. So, if you want to be healthy, you will exercise and gain muscle mass, and thus become heavier. I fail to see how we disagree here, and don't understand your attitude.

So, NO, I do NOT need to gain wieght, big time. I don't need to start stuffing myself with a lot of food either, as you also suggested.

What I have been doing, and what I will continue to do, is exercise regularly, and make continual improvements to my diet. That is my *goal* for this year. More than a goal, thougn, those are habits that I have decided to create for myself.

I'm needlessly pissy and take comments I read on the internet entirely too seriously. I intend to push forward with my vague and immeasurable goals of mysteriously skinny-yet-muscular fitness.

Squat is 250 x 5 x 3
Bench is 150 x 5 x 3
deadlift is 315 x 5 x 1

Squat and deadlift were tied consistently until I switched my deadlift grip.

you're still bigger than i used to be. 6'4 165 = 20.1 BMI. mine was 15.1 not long ago 😛

The hardest part of this won't be adding weight to my lifts, but losing weight from my body while I do it. I'm doing a decent amount of interval training on off days from the gym, including boxing & sprinting, which should let me burn off fat w/o affecting too much muscle. I'm also doing Bill Star's 5x5 now which has me scheduled to hit my numbers after ~10 weeks. honestly, i think that's overly optimistic, but the year is 52 weeks long, so hopefully i'll get there eventually 🙂

The bench press is possible within 10 weeks. The Squat and DL look less likely. Possibly get 2-3reps out at your new weights.

It depends on what type of lifter you are and how long it has taken you to get your current lifts. If your fairly new you could add 50lbs in to your lifts and get the 5reps within 10 weeks. That would be really impressive gains imo, along with your cutting.

heh i'm the exact opposite. if that was me, i could get my deadlifts up no problem, the bench would be my problem 😀

I'd like to break my school's mile record of 4:19, but given what I was running last year, and even with some extra room, I think low-mid 4:20s is all I could realistically do.

I'd also like to break the 3200m record of 9:43, which I think is a lot more doable. The 800m record is untouchable given my lack of leg speed.

Nope, it's for any health/fitness goals you have. Good luck with your times, the fact that you're shooting for them means you must be in incredible cardiovascular shape.
