My goal right now is to figure out just what it is I want to do with my life. Since the new year I've been very depressed and unable to focus on much of anything, and my job performance suffered quite a bit. I was recently let go very recently because of that, and now I'm using my time to re-evaluate my priorities and work on some things with a therapist. I'm planning on making some changes in the next two years (moving to California/the Pacific Northwest like I've always wanted) so I'm hoping that a little adventure and some help from a professional will help me figure out just what the hell it is that I want to do with my life.

Life goals, career goals, etc

Is it bad that I don't have goals? Or at least not in the traditional sense. I always hate those interview questions like, what are you goals? Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I never know how to answer them. My goal is to stay employed/be employed and have enough money to live and buy some cool things here and there.

I don't have any goals to become anything in particular or get a particular job.

When I was younger I had goals that I wanted to do this or that but as I got older I realized that life sucks and reaching those goals is sometimes impossible or really difficult so why bother?

I did buy a house so I guess that is 1 goal that I achieved...

I don't have any real career goals either to be honest. I'm not one of these people who claim that if they won a huge lottery tomorrow, they'd still go to work. Not me. I'd probably break my fingers dialing the phone to quit. A job is a necessary evil in life -- I'm glad some people seem to enjoy theirs but most people don't and I suppose I'm in that camp.

The one thing I did want to try in my career, consulting, is something I just switched to a couple of weeks ago. So far, I'm not sure I like it to be honest and miss my cushy corporate job. The issue is that I was stagnating at my corporate job both in salary and knowledge. This new job is definitely going to stretch me and the pay increase was huge. At any rate, I think after I've done this for a year or two, I might try to move back to a corporate job that is less stressful and ride it out until retirement (hopefully).

The joy I get out of life is from doing things I actually enjoy (oddly enough). I love spending hours working in my home network environment and bringing up new servers, etc. I love traveling -- I was in France in May and even though I've been all over the world, I'd have to say going to Normandy has been the best vacation I've ever taken. I'm passionate about WW2 stuff and to stand on the beaches where so many made the ultimate sacrifice really meant a lot to me. So I guess my goal in life is just to continue traveling and learning/experiencing new things.

no. just trying to ride this wave out as long as possible and have fun. i'm not in major debt and almost bought a house this year(2x times) but both fell through but i'm pretty content with the apartment i'm in now(4 miles from work). i suppose "goals" i have is to finally get a house in the next year and close the gap(few hours) between the current SO and i(seeing as we're both mature adults who want something serious).

i'll never stop having fun though, i've spent WAY too much time thinking about the serious shit and it's depressing.

Yeah, it's pretty bad. Without a goal, what's the point in trying?

You like shooting... why not try to get an NRA classification, or a higher classification if you already have one?

It took my dad about 5 years of daily practice to get Master classification. He was pretty hard core about it.

Had an early mid life crisis and decided to train to compete in powerlifting. Hope to get a 1500lbs total before I'm 40.

I have reached most of my goals but still have few to accomplish.

Family/Children - check
House - check
Paid off debt/stay debt free -check

Outstanding Goals
Career. I'm on my 3rd career and I'm not sure what the hell i really want to do. I'm not sure I really enjoy being a PM.

And that will drive the next goal. Obtain education, if I stay where I am it will most likely be Business Bachelors and PMP.

Biggest problem is lack of time AND fact that my memory is REALLY bad which always prevented me from doing well in school.

And of course, motivation for education....I have 0.

:(

Goals:
These goals to get my house in the condition I'd prefer to have it in until and through my retirement
*Have the garage turned into an apartment
*Finish all the remodeling in the house in one fell swoop: completely gut the living room, dining room, 2 bedrooms, and office at the same time. New floor plan (2 bedrooms 2 closets and office = 1 bedroom, master bath, and walk in closet; doorway between dining room & living room removed, with the two rooms opened up to each other. Solid hardwood floors, a couple of bay windows
*rebuild the porch on the house - instead of 80% down the front, I want it to wrap around the side of the house as well. More open construction, tongue and groove ceiling, and stained/polyurethaned hardwood floor (rather than a painted porch floor.)
*steel roof on house, small barn
*New fence along the road. (1000 feet or so of fence.)

Professionally:
*a few more grad classes in math
*master's degree in physics
*possibly start teaching at one of the local universities/colleges, in addition to my college class taught in the high school

Hobbies:
*be at least 80% self-sufficient for my own food (not sugar/flour/or some other staples - but 100% self-sufficient for meat, dairy, veggies, fruit)
*more self-sufficient for energy - solar, wind, hydro, and/or natural gas (my own well) generator.

Might do that, thanks. :)

Yeah like rudeguy said, you can run from everything except yourself. My PM box is always open too if you want to talk about anything. I've been where you are many times and seen probably a dozen different professionals. I hope you're able to rise above it.

As for the OP, my goal is to never stop learning and never stand still.

As for this quote from your post... "I realized that life sucks and reaching those goals is sometimes impossible or really difficult so why bother?"

Because you can.

Impossible is a word you're using to justify not putting yourself outside your comfort zone. Never let anyone tell you what is or isn't possible to achieve. If you want it, go fucking get it.. it really is as simple as that and only YOU can make it happen. If I had to count how many times I've been told by people that what I am striving for is impossible or made to feel stupid for doing so, I would lose track very quickly. There is no greater feeling than leaving fools like that behind. Is life really hard at times? Sure as hell it is. But you have two choices with how you spend the time in your life.... you can make the most of it and strive for some enjoyment, or you can feel miserable and worthless. If you're here anyway, why not pick the path where you don't feel like shit every day?

2. Learn how to play guitar to a reasonable level of competency (i.e., good enough to play at campfires and not be embarrassed).
Easier said than done. I can play a few chord progressions that might be interpreted as a song.
If you don't play for a few weeks, you lose a lot.

My shorter term goals are to lose some weight and get a Mustang GT. I may still be a loser, but at least I'll be a cool loser :)

Got my CPA designation early this year. Looking at the CFP or CFA. More than likely going for the CFP.

Also looking to settle down with the right woman. Getting long in the tooth at 31.

Xanis changing things probably won't make a difference if you don't figure out what is actually bothering you. Best of luck. I went through that around 2 years ago. It was a tough year but you have to honest with yourself about what you want. Things will get better. If anything take the time you have away from your job to put yourself out there.

When I was younger I had goals that I wanted to do this or that but as I got older I realized that life sucks and reaching those goals is sometimes impossible or really difficult so why bother?

I had a tough hand dealt to me when it came to college and I kind of lost my path and gave up on a lot of my goals. I've floundered since then and only recently have been really evaluating what I can do to make changes in my life.

My thought is that being poor sucks. I'm not poor at the moment, but I don't make nearly enough money to have a few hobbies and travel. Currently what sounds reasonable in effort and time is to go back to school for a bachelor's of science in nursing, and then later get a master's of science in nursing to be an anesthetist. Will take about 8 years, with required hours and experience, but in the end salaries start around $130k and can go as high as $200k/year. I have no doubt I'm smart enough or willing to work hard enough to achieve that after having done the jobs I've had so far. I will appreciate it.

I have some goals that I think about:
-To have a job that isn't 40 hours a week, unless I find a career I love
-To have enough money to support my hobbies and traveling to tropical places
-To gain weight, hit 180 lbs or so, and be cut and muscular. I'm very slim, used to be skinny.
-To take up archery and become great at that
-To take up shooting and become very accurate
-To learn how to play guitar, violin, piano, or all three
-To have a house on some land and put together my own home theater
-To learn to hang glide, maybe get to instructor level proficiency
-To learn to surf and do so at beautiful beaches
-To have a hot wife

my goal is graduating. It's easier to find a goal when you're still in education I guess.
