As for the OP, my goal is to never stop learning and never stand still.

As for this quote from your post... "I realized that life sucks and reaching those goals is sometimes impossible or really difficult so why bother?"

Because you can.

Impossible is a word you're using to justify not putting yourself outside your comfort zone. Never let anyone tell you what is or isn't possible to achieve. If you want it, go fucking get it.. it really is as simple as that and only YOU can make it happen. If I had to count how many times I've been told by people that what I am striving for is impossible or made to feel stupid for doing so, I would lose track very quickly. There is no greater feeling than leaving fools like that behind. Is life really hard at times? Sure as hell it is. But you have two choices with how you spend the time in your life.... you can make the most of it and strive for some enjoyment, or you can feel miserable and worthless. If you're here anyway, why not pick the path where you don't feel like shit every day?

Aye,

I have very few, if any goals as well. Much of it due to the fact that I have a terrible fear of actually doing the things--the thing--that I want to do and would probably make me the happiest--mainly because I feel that this world is a bit too cutthroat, too difficult to break through and manage any kind of decent living. Due to that fear, I pretty much stick to a job and the type of jobs that I can do, mainly because I have developed too many skills for this work that make me easily hirable...while I continue to dislike the work.

As Platypus says, the only way to get past this is to ignore such issues and actually go for that which makes you happiest. Sometimes, that is getting past the people that tell you that you can't; other times, that is getting past your own reservations and fears, and simply not giving a dick about failure.

-Gain ten years of experience in a field that utilizes my abilities so I can gain an entry level job in said field.
-Become as pretty on the outside as I feel on the inside.
-Acquire a wondrous horse I can ride the country side with; I will name him Scruffy.
-Learn to get people to try to do things they don't always want to do because god damnit, I'm right and they're wrong. They just don't know it yet.

OK... now it's become a typical ATOT brag thread. All it needs is a mention of a $200K+ salary and a BMW M3. Oh... I think that we got both of those as well. :)

And all other opinions are evil...

I've accomplished all the goals I had and then some, and have no interest in finding anything new to persue. I want to redo/update one of iPhone apps but that's pretty weak.

The last one is very cool.

My goal right now is to figure out just what it is I want to do with my life. Since the new year I've been very depressed and unable to focus on much of anything, and my job performance suffered quite a bit. I was recently let go very recently because of that, and now I'm using my time to re-evaluate my priorities and work on some things with a therapist. I'm planning on making some changes in the next two years (moving to California/the Pacific Northwest like I've always wanted) so I'm hoping that a little adventure and some help from a professional will help me figure out just what the hell it is that I want to do with my life.

I have no idea what I want to do either and maybe thats my problem. I'm comfortable at my job. I do it well but don't know where I want to go from there. I wish I was getting paid more. my manager recommended me for promotion but hasn't been approved yet, and he's not sure if there will be a salary increase with it. If there is, it wont be much.

There's things I'd like to do, but doing them isn't practical nor can I afford to do them (especially with this house that is taking up half my monthly salary).

Be careful when requesting promotions in IT... once you get high enough, you'll spend most of your time in meetings with management. Those meetings were painful for me, as the management where I worked at the time seemed to have no clue long it took or how much it would cost to make software and hardware changes. They would ask for major functionality changes on a Monday, and expect them to be tested and finished by the next Friday. That's AFTER we gave them 2 month estimates on the work.

Some guy posts specifically on how much he makes, and mine makes it a brag thread (I drive a six year old Boxster and have a sub-200k salary, btw)

Sounds like your typical upper management. Careless, inconsiderate and completely dis attached from reality.

Current goal : obtain Phd and GTFO out of school already. I'm getting to the point where I'm starting to not want to be here anymore, but I've still got another ~2 years to go. I'm starting to get the feeling of, "I need to move on". So close (classes done) but still so far (dissertation work). :(

My short-medium goals are easy. I just want a better job. In the long term (5-10+ years), I have no idea. Don't really see the point in planning that far ahead since it's not going to work out how I planned it anyway - it won't necessarily be worse than I planned, just not how I planned it.
