GN: Beating the 2070 with moded Vega 56

The difference is more like 280-300 watt range when you consider each graduation in the graph is 80 watts and there is typically 3 to 4 bars difference in power consumption between the RTX and RX. The RTX 2070 is consuming somewhere around the 300watt range when the benchmark is running while vega 56 is consuming 600watts.

That's a big excessive considering there is only 100 dollar difference in price between the two cards. Even overclockers in the past would be choking up about this difference since power supplies were much smaller then.

Interestingly there are several games (mostly DX12) where Alienbabeltech (take it with a grain of salt) found that the AIB 2070 and AIB Vega 56 (Powercolor Red Devil) were about equal with both at stock.

I have the Powercolor Red Devil and power wise it runs about 200-220W when benchmarking vs the 2070s reported185-190W.

It maybe going forward that power-performance is closer in DX12 games since Turing and Vega are more similar feature wise than Pascal / Vega, (excluding Turings ray tracing, etc capabilities).
 
Don't you know? Its all about ball bearings these days... I mean performance per watt. Efficiency man! Save the earth! Except when that doesn't matter because raw performance means everything!

I feel like its not that important really, but it seems to be the first thing certain camps fall back on when they don't have a definitive performance lead. But muh powah.
 
Vega is definitely a beastly card, its held back by all of the added on tech that is for professional workloads, stripped down to its pure gaming elements and on a smaller process with higher clocks it will crush even the GTX 1080, as one user above posted it's already competitive in some DX12 and Vulkan games to the GTX 1080.

Vega 64 actually beast the GTX 1080ti in Wolfenstein 2 and is neck and neck with it in Doom.

I think you mean it's just crazy that you can get the same performance from a last gen card. Nvidia: Last generation performance at tomorrow's prices! You know how enthusiasts work right? Extract as much performance from what you bought and disregard things like stock power and TDP. It's literally the point and how it's done.

So uh how exactly did they cool that thing? Gotta be custom water.

Nah it's the stock card. It's shown at the beginning and near the end. They also mentioned they went faster a previous card that was under water.

Yeah, like you would literally need a freaking 1200W PSU just to launch this thing. And for that much power you can overclock a 1060 with a mod and still get better performance than a Vega 64! It's downright crazy!

Fortunately the era of 1000w PSUs was ushered in by Fermi. Vega 64? We are talking about 2070 perf here. Can a 1060 get there? I'd be interested in that test.

I'd like to see proof of a 1060 at Vega 64/1080 levels unless he's talking about a hardware mod that requires soldering on extra components and more exotic cooling.
