I just acquired a gmail account from google, and now wondering if it's only web-based or if pop/imap and smtp servers are also available. Would be nice if there were. Would anyone know?

Why would it? The only reason Google is offering Gmail is so that the company can search your email and offer targeted text ads. Why would they offer POP and IMAP servers? That would obliterate their business model.

Not really. POP at the least would still involve the e-mail sitting on their servers for a period of time. They could parse it, insert their own advertiser code and force you to download it as an HTML document. For POP clients asking the server to remove the messages after they're downloaded, the server could instead move it to the Archive folder or whatever.

Does Gmail support automatic forwarding and POP3 access?

Answer return to Help Center

Not at the moment, but Google believes in helping people access information whenever and however they want to do so. In the future you will be able to access Gmail messages from non-Gmail accounts for free or at a nominal fee.

GMail question.

If I don't login to check my email for 3 months, is my account automatically deleted?

here's the summary for people who don't have Gmail login:

POP3 access ---> we'll try
automatic msg forwarding ---> working on it

i personally prefer an IMAP rather than POP3 though.
