I just acquired a gmail account from google, and now wondering if it's only web-based or if pop/imap and smtp servers are also available. Would be nice if there were. Would anyone know?

Why would it? The only reason Google is offering Gmail is so that the company can search your email and offer targeted text ads. Why would they offer POP and IMAP servers? That would obliterate their business model.
Not really. POP at the least would still involve the e-mail sitting on their servers for a period of time. They could parse it, insert their own advertiser code and force you to download it as an HTML document. For POP clients asking the server to remove the messages after they're downloaded, the server could instead move it to the Archive folder or whatever.Originally posted by: kranky
