That option would have made the most sense for regular people, but I guess they want to make a statement that they completely stand by their company/industry and they want to make up for the whole private jet fiasco last time.

The Volt has a battery only range of 40 miles. But it also has a gasoline engine/generator on board to keep the vehicle running when the battery is low. That is good for an additional 320 miles. So it can go 360 miles on a tank.

That being said, he started the trip in a Malibu Hybrid and switched to the Volt in Washington to "make a statement"

Why aren't the oil companies bailing out the auto industry? It's their main source of income. No cars = no need for oil.

Oil companies make a shitload more than gasoline and motor oil.
Take a look at your desk, how many plastic items are on it? Most of the plastic in those items comes from oil.
 
Funny, this little publicity stunt probably cost them more than the flight on a corporate jet did.

If the CEO's were truly smart... they would fly the jets into Manassas airport. Hop in the volt in the parking lot and drive into DC.

They could easily lease one for the day with a different n-number so it could not be tracked as easy.

I did, and the question stands. If the prototype is so valuable, then why bring it out at all? Have you ever seen the traffic in D.C.? Wouldn't a better statement be made by driving halfway across the country in a Volt?

They could have just stuck with the Malibu hybrid and made their statement. They just wanted more publicity for the Volt.

Plastic, fertilizers, pesticides/herbicides, just to name a few...

err...that's a prototype "two years before production" Volt.
Besides the fact that at this point it would probably take $500k to replace if he totalled it, maybe just maybe they don't want to risk a PR nightmare if the car fails somewhere between Detroit and DC.
 
The Volt seems like an interesting car. The 40 mile limit is good enough for 90% of commuters, and it takes only 8 KWH to drive those 40 miles. At 8.5 cents per KWH here in IL, that's only 68 cents for a commute!

that according to Goldman Sachs the impact from the failures could be up to $1trillion...
that with the failure of ONE manufacturer, outside of chrysler, will almost certainly spell major problems for suppliers... which then affect the other manufacturers who now can no longer get parts...
that chp 11 is almost impossible for any of the big 3 to come out of?

how much more do you want?

oh and Chrys CEO Bob Nardelli stated this today as well

"The first job that would go would be mine, but if in fact that's the criteria that means we would get money to save Chrysler and the people who have worked there for 80 some years, I would do it."

My guess is they don't trust the Volt to drive that far. It's probably not been tested on long trips like that yet.
