GM launches 'Red Tag' program

Analog

Lifer
DETROIT -- In an effort to boost lagging sales, General Motors Corp. today announced a new incentives program of "Red Tag" prices on 2005- and 2006-model cars and light trucks through Jan. 3.

GM has been suffering billion-dollar losses and a declining North American market share. Its U.S. sales fell about 23 percent in October from one year earlier, while they fell about 11 percent industrywide.

Under the new incentives, dealers will post fixed maximum prices on vehicles. They cover most models of the Buick, Chevrolet, GMC and Pontiac nameplates and knock from several hundred to $4,400 or more off the list price of its models, GM said.

The GM announcement can be expected to trigger a new round of price cuts across the car industry, even by Asian producers that have been gaining market share at the expense of the U.S. Big Three, said analyst Noriaki Hirakata of Morgan Stanley in Tokyo.

"Japanese -- they hate incentives, but they will have to respond," Hirakata said. "Generally, the selling price of light trucks will be under pressure."

GM reported a net loss of $1.6 billion in the third quarter, compared with net income of $315 million a year ago, as its North American division continued to suffer from high health care costs and falling sales of sport utility vehicles.

The automaker's North American market share fell to 25.6 percent in the third quarter from 28.5 percent a year ago. Through the first nine months of this year, GM's market share was 26.1 percent, down from 27 percent in 2004.

The new round of incentives "combines the best features of the recent 'GM Employee Discount for Everyone' program and last December's 'Red Tag' program," GM said in a statement.

GM said the red tag prices are "consistent across the country," exclusive of taxes, title costs and dealer fees.

As examples of the new prices for 2006 models, the tag price for the GMC Envoy two-wheel drive SLE 3SA sport utility vehicle would be $4,442 below its previous sticker price, GM said on its Web site.

Among cars, the tag price of the Buick LaCrosse CX car would drop $3,019, while that for the base-model Pontiac Vibe car would fall $692 from the sticker price.

The company announced other incentives for its Cadillac, Saturn, Saab and Hummer nameplates. It said Cadillac, Saturn and Saab will offer $500 rebates, while Hummer will have special pricing for a rear entertainment system.

How about they stop building crap? Maybe that would help their sales. I know when I was looking earlier this year GM had the worst build quality of every brand I looked at. Ford, Dodge, Nissan, Toyota(what I eventually bought) and Honda.

How so? And how were others better?

I saw several GM's that looked like they hadn't even been finished. Saw at least 5 Trailblazers that were missing parts of their carpet in the rear seats and storage areas. One was missing the glove box door, the ashtray door and the control knobs for the AC. I kid you not. When we opened it up and the salesman couldn't believe it and just kept apologizing and saying more and more of the stuff they were getting in was like that. The carpet thing had been a problem for months he said. So bad that they had contracted with a local upholstery place to install the missing carpet because it was easier than trying to deal with the factories to get it fixed.

Looked at a Buick Rendezvous that the front passenger seat wasn't totally bolted down. The build quality just looked lacking. In places the sheet metal pieces would be so far apart you could stick your finger in between them.

From: J.D. Power's 2005 Initial Quality Study
General Motors earns five top model segment awards, including those for the Chevrolet Malibu/Malibu Maxx (Entry Midsize Car), Buick Century (Premium Midsize Car) and Chevrolet Suburban (Full-Size SUV).
General Motors Corporation sweeps the North/South America plant quality awards. General Motors? Oshawa #2, Ontario, Canada, plant, which produces the Buick Century, Buick LaCrosse and Pontiac Grand Prix, earns the Gold Plant Quality Award. The Oshawa #1, Ontario, and Hamtramck, Mich., plants earn the Silver and Bronze Plant Quality awards, respectively.

I sure as hell didn't see quality in the models I was looking at.

I really wanted to buy American. Never owned anything other than a domestic, but the quality of the Toyota I bought was just so much better than the donestic models I looked at. Wasn't too impressed with the Nissan, but even it was better than the Trailblazer, Durango, and Rendezvous I looked at.

IF what you say is true, then someone went in there and stole the parts after it left the factory. With as many people who see the interior of the vehicle before it is put on the dealer's lot, that is the only thing that could have happened.

Intersting thoughts here.

I bought a Mazda truck ten years ago. Although it had a Ford body, I was sold on the drive train and better engine.

After 10 years and 256,000 miles it still runs great, doesn't eat oil and endures better than any other vehicle I have owned. And this really was a blessing when a few years back when I was jobless for nine months.

Salesman I was dealing with told me he had seen a lot of that type of stuff. Plus the Trailblazers I saw without all their carpet was at 3 different dealerships. The guy I was talking to at the place where the 1 missing the interior parts had said they sent several to have carpet put in them after they showed up at the lot without it.

I'm not in here to bash domestics, just saying what I saw. Believe me I would have loved to bought a domestic, but when my $$ is on the line I'm going to buy the best I can. In this case it was Toyota.

They have the same engine and drive train.

I believe many, MANY MANY other automakers may do this.

Retail sales hit the shitter and arent comin back out. lots of dealers are scared.

this includes retail sales for Foreign cars as well.

they just arent getting better.

Haven't GM learned that even with their employee pricing, the foreign automakers are still gaining ground without much incentives.

Aye....

Besides the major problems with UAW and such, GM just needs to realize they need to make their cars much nicer. They look and feel so amazingly cheap it's not even funny.

They should take a look at Ford (no, seriously!) and look at the Fusion and 500, especially the former. Instead of trying their hardest to sell the same old crap, they should try and make cars people want.

word. I'm looking for a car either for this model year or next...I'm in no rush...but before the Fusion came out I wasn't even considering Ford....at least they're trying to change things up. GM's the same old garbage....although I did like the Grand-Am and Grand-Prix

this kind of stuff AMAZES me? how do you know ford is trying to change things up other than styling?

you say GM is the same old garbage and yet Consumer Reports says it's quality is very high.

weird.

so basically, are you basing your comments all on LOOKS only?

exactly, if they want to do the fanboi ism thing and quote quality control etc, ok, toyota and honda have pretty good track records, recently, i can remember a time when they were junk, but that aside, right now they are better quality fine.

but to base it simply on LOOKS is just astoundingly stupid as looks are PURELY in the eye of the beholder.

g6 Coupe is SWEET. i test drove a g6 the other day and it was prety nice.

i like the new impala with the v8 also.

my point is, looks is so subjective. it really annoys me that people dismiss gm cars purely based on looks. and IMO many of the gm's are as good looking if not better than the camry's and accords that people end up buying.

Yes, people need to just go into the showrooms and actually try out these cars, they will be very surprised. Stopping going by what other people and biased publications say, they seriously don't know what they're talking about.
