General Motors Corp., hoping to clear dealer lots of growing numbers of unsold models, is trying yet another tactic to drum up sales.

GM will announce Wednesday that it will offer all buyers the same discount that employees get, giving consumers nationwide thousands of dollars off the price of every 2005 car or truck except the Chevrolet Corvette, a person familiar with the plan said Friday. The employee discount varies by model.

The new program, to be unveiled publicly the same day that GM is expected to report another weak month of U.S. auto sales, could help trim high inventories of cars and trucks. That particularly means full-size pickups and sport utility vehicles, sales of which have suffered due to record high gasoline prices, dealers said.

Weakening sales for GM's aging truck lineup, including its most profitable models, were a major reason why GM posted a $1.1 billion loss in the first quarter, its worst result since 1992.

Dealers contacted by the Free Press said they would welcome the program.

"If that's what they're doing, I think that's great," Lynn Thompson, co-owner of Thompson Pontiac-GMC-Cadillac-Saab in Springfield, Mo., told the Free Press in a telephone interview. "I'm not selling as many as I need to," he said about GM's large SUVs.

A GM official declined to comment.

With gasoline prices hovering at around $2 a gallon and GM's truck lineup several years older than competitors' models, many of GM's most profitable vehicles sit unsold at dealerships. Dealers have enough supply of the Cadillac Escalade SUV, once one of its hottest models, to last 139 days at the current selling rate, according to Ward's Automotive Reports. GM's preferred rate would be about a 70 to 80 day supply.

The days' supply is even higher for some other models, such as the Pontiac Montana SV6 minivan, the Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck and the GMC Yukon XL SUV.

"GM still has to clear excess inventories, particularly of their trucks. The new incentives suggest that sales were soft in May," said David Healy, an automotive analyst with Burnham Securities, which manages mutual funds and large individual investors.

One reason GM may be anxious to move out the older trucks is to make room for a new generation of large pickups and SUVs, code-named GMT-900, expected to hit dealerships early next year.

The employee discount pretty much just takes care of the tax/title. So just look at the sicker price and that is about what you'd pay.

That's about the only GM product that I'd be interested in since they exclude the 'vette. I'd take the Pontiac/GTO badges on it and restore it to a Holden Monaro :D

would it make more sense to have Capped ANYONE rather than FOR in your topic summary? ;)

Are you sure about that? I'm unfamilar with the GM Employee plan, but with Ford's my 'stang's out the door price was thousands below the MSRP.

This is kinda sad IMO. GM is really on the ropes. Their deep, deep discounting has a lot to do with their atrocious resale value, and it'll get worse before it gets better.

Drove past yesterday, ALL the cars were gone except for 2 of those fugly SSR's.

Deeply discounting the UGLIEST vehicle lineup on the planet may not help clear the lots unless people are simply desparate for a vehicle. I cannot believe how atrocious almost all new GM vehicles look.

I have a good friend who used to own two GM dealerships up in Michigan, he himself said he wouldn't buy another GM... :)

You're FOS.

It's thousands off MSRP. The best thing is you'll be getting the best price with no negotiating.

Quick example base vehicle no options. I'm not going to spend a lot of time on this.

2005 Equinox LT FWD

MSRP: $21885.00
GMS: $19657.44

Discount is comparable on options. Delivery charge is not discounted.

Yeah, I'm FOS. My dad works for GM moron, and he's bought ALL his cars (which is quite a few cars) with the discount. The discount USED to be really good because you could talk the salesman down and THEN drop the discount bomb on him. And even ON TOP of that you'd have the GM credit card which had built up GM dollars on it that you could apply toward a new car purchase. Well, it's all changed. You can't talk the salesman down anymore. It's either the discount or the saleman's quote. The discount pretty much covers the tax/title, maybe a little more. Don't believe me, go buy a new GM car with the discount and come back and talk to me.

2005 Equinox LT FWD

MSRP: $21885.00
GMS: $19657.44

Thank you for proving me right genius. Add TT&L to the $19,657.44 and you'll see it comes REAL close to the sticker price (MSRP). Am I still FOS?

It's not just GM... Chrysler has some fuglyness in their lineup as well (the Crossfire, for example :barf; ), and BMW (wtf were they thinking?). But yes, GM is guilty too. IMO, most of the newer Cadillacs are just really strange and ugly looking.

They could be giving away GM's and I wouldn't buy one. My wife's Acura and my Toyota have been much more reliable than any of my previous GM vehciles. My last GM car was in the shop monthly. I was on a first-name basis with the mechanics. I was spending more to repair the car than I did to pay for it.

In my opinion, the XLR is fugly as hell.
