Doesn't mean they won't lose money making just 5% of the cars with MT's.

I don't know for sure either way, though.

Americans just don't seem to care much for manuals.

Looks like a money loser then...

The only losers are Americans with their lazy ignorant asses who want slushbox transmissions.

There is also the trend for autos to get better fuel economy according to the EPA.

Can't be driving a manual just for the fun of it since an auto would be a little better for the planet you know...

You don't need to shift for yourself...

etc.

We want our SUV's and pickups and V8's, and you want your clutch... :D

Fuck, let's make our vehicles drive themselves to work. Nobody needs to drive.

Let's take all the fun out of our lives. Let's all drive big numb boring SUVs. :p

so closed minded. many people drive just because they need to get from point A to point B. and I am glad they use automatic, they can barely drive with it. the statistics, 95% vs 5% tells where customer is.

The stats for a boring middle of the road car might show that. The M5 only has a manual option because the US market wanted it.

HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES!?

;)

I would go for stick but the vast majority of people do not want standard transmission, so they are not built. Simple demand. Most people don't care for it.

Glad to see they have updated the manual transmission in the 2010. After a month-and-a-half of ownnership with my 2008 Fusion SE 5-speed manual, I can attest that the car really could use that 6th gear. Only wish i could upgrade mine. I love the car otherwise - my ONLY nitpick thus far (and I am not alone among manual Fusion owners) has been that either 5th gear needed to be taller or another gear should be added. It is good to see a car company listen and react to it's customers.

you're aware that nobody really buys manual transmissions right?

that tranny will prob come out to under 10% of their sales of the fusion, which will already have trouble turning in profit compared to its competitors.

Manual shift is the best, but it is not for people that drive a lot in rush hour - stop & go traffic. If your commute is on roads that do not have that much congestion, then yes a manual is better. And I am a believer that a manual shift car, will force drivers to be more aware of what & when they are doing, instead of just hitting the gas pedal and driving without care. Plus you get better vehicle control in both rain and snow / ice. Only downside is occassional clutch repairs, on average about 100K miles or so.

edited. the population that own manual cars are very small. they dont give much total revenue. something that ford needs right now.

Hey! I drove a manual Kia van in Korea with the "Hurricane" diesel in it for a year.

Never again. :D

What an example!

Lots of minivans were available with manuals up into the 90s. In 89 and 90 you could get a dodge caravan with a 2.5l turbo and a 5 speed manual trans.
