What does she do on the internet? Is 5GB enough?
Tell her to get her butt down to the local wireless store and get a datacard?

3. I used to help people with their comps, but like all the other nerds here I learned my lesson. I don't even help my mom with computer stuff now. When people ask for help I will throw out obvious suggestions but will never actually sit at their computer and troubleshoot. I would help a girl I was banging though. Maybe.

4. Tell her to get Verizon MiFi or other similar service.

5. Getting cable installed is simple. Schedule with cable company, and let landlord/realty/management co. know the time of the appointement if they need to unlock any basement or anything the cable guy will have to access.

1. Faptastic!

3. Yeah I know most people in this thread are aghast that I won't help her, but honestly I can't have yet another person bombarding me with computer related questions. I'm going to be in graduate school full-time and still working 40hrs./week in like 2 weeks.
4. Good idea actually....
5. She claims the realty company won't do this...yet she renewed her lease to stay there.

Good god you're thick. Helping a friend = 'thanks'. Helping the gf = sex.

Seriously OP, what the hell is wrong with you? The advice given for you co-worker does not apply to your freaking girlfriend. Its sad that she was even nervous about asking you for help. Are you that selfish with all parts of your relationship? If it's even close, you're a shitty boyfriend, and don't deserve her.

Has she tried turning it off and on again?

Seriously, although I agree with the whole refusing tech support with those around you for sanity purposes, that does not apply to significant others. Hope you enjoy the blue balls for a while...

Helping her with her computer problem or at least looking into it sounds like a good excuse to go over to her place and get some pooty-tang. So, what are you waiting for?

lol my balls do not depend on providing tech support to her. She has tried rebooting, this has been going on for several days apparently.

This. Unless by GF the OP means some chick he occasionally dates, then fine, whatever. However, if this a girl he's actually in some type of more serious relationship with then wtf, go help her. I'd imagine he'll be over at her place sometime anyway? It's not that hard.

Never help people with computer problems. Not to mention people think you can solve a computer problem with descriptions like, "it makes a funny noise." (Actually that one is a decent thing to start with, but you get what I mean).

1) It is possible that the connection that she is stealing/borrowing from has problems from the router into the modem or the modem to the real world.

Such used to happen all the time where I am.
I had to reset the modem and router after every storm came through. I finally got the cable company to provide a new modem.

Is it now cool to refuse to help with computer problems?

It used to be, you were happy to have to prove your nerdship to people in need. At least I thought so.
