Girlfriend called asking for help with computer

So my gf just called, hasn't been able to get online for 3 days. She steals a wireless signal from her neighbor. Her computer says she's connected still, but when she tries to load any webpage, it times out without loading anything. Unfortunately for her I learned my lesson from this thread. She sounded pissed that I couldn't magically infer what the problem with her computer was, and didn't get why I said "I have no clue, no idea. I have no idea about anything related to networking, I can't help you in any way shape or form, you probably know more than me about networking". Think she bought it?

I honestly don't know what to tell her anyway; she lives in this shitty apartment. The phone company said her apartment isn't wired to have phone service. So apparently before cell phones no one could have phones for the 50 years or so that the building existed but cell phones did not. She's also tried to have cable installed but claims she didn't know how to schedule it with the realty company?? Anyway, I told her to stop stealing wireless, and get a cable connection so she can get internet.

haha thanks. I'm not worried. I was actually telling her the story from that thread in my OP the other day. She said "I know you were just saying how you hate helping people with IT stuff...but I have an IT question for you" Really?

Aren't apartments generally required by local municiple codes required to be wired with at least one phone jack for phone service?

And no offense, but your GF sounds like a moron or just one of those helpless people that push stuff onto other people because of (insert excuse); couldn't figure out how to set up an appointment with the cable company? Give me a freakin' break; they arrange it with you over the phone when you order it.

if you don't want to help out a girlfriend, you must not be that interested in said girlfriend.

i don't know why - i'll take the problem off your hands. ;)

i can't see the pics (damn work firewall) but seriously... she knows how to steal wireless, but doesnt know how to call the cable company to set up service?

either she's a complete fucking moron...
or she thinks you are.

if she's not drop dead gorgeous, she'd be dropped like a bad habit.

Are we supposed to give you a cookie for following the ATOT trend of 'Never help anyone with PCs'?

Yes, you become everyone's computer bitch if you help your uncle, aunt, cousin, friends and everyone. I help out my GF and my parents with computers because they're close to me. I'd rather do that then they go to dumbshits at Geeksquad and shelling out $$$.

I think she's hot.

Threesome?

Just kidding, but seriously, that's fucked up. Just help her!

Where's she live? I'll go "help" your girlfriend with her network problem.

And by help I mean "have sex with".

1. Hot, good job posting pics. Permission to fap?

2. Too late.

3. I used to help people with their comps, but like all the other nerds here I learned my lesson. I don't even help my mom with computer stuff now. When people ask for help I will throw out obvious suggestions but will never actually sit at their computer and troubleshoot. I would help a girl I was banging though. Maybe.

4. Tell her to get Verizon MiFi or other similar service.

5. Getting cable installed is simple. Schedule with cable company, and let landlord/realty/management co. know the time of the appointement if they need to unlock any basement or anything the cable guy will have to access.

tell her to get off the computer and stay her ass in the kitchen.

no seriously, just fix the damn thing.

me thinks there are some underlying issues here.

This. Now get ur butt there, do whatever you can do, and let her know that not everything can be magically fixed by you and somethings can be beyond your scope to fix. Offer to look at it next time it breaks, but let her know that if it's beyond ur abilities to fix, get a PC repair guy.

As much as I hate fixing other people's computers, I would make an exception for a gf. I would definitely make her pay for any parts I needed though.
