being a gamer is a very loose definition. someone who is into all of the shiny fluffy games you mention can still be considered a gamer. The "hardcore" part of the industry is marketed towards males, so it's not really their (women's) fault for sticking with Nintendo and the like.
 
One thing I'd :heart: in a girl would be one that could beat me at games. One of my exes played some games but the thing is... she wasn't as good as me. Not a problem for me, but she kept trying to beat me... at once. So I literally played around 50 Tekken Tag fights in a row beating her every time. It got boring after 10 🙁. Oh and Lee Chaolan ftw.

Weird, I've never had the cheap mats (that come in the game bundles) slip out from under me. They do move while you're "dancing," which can get rather annoying. The only reason I've almost fell is because I did an improper dance move (there's more than one way to hit all the notes... some are better than others as some will work for your difficulty level, but if you up it and you have faster progression, the weird move for that pattern may not work because of whatever it leads into).
 
Lots of ladies played Star Wars Galaxies. Lots of ladies PLAY EQ2. Lots of ladies play Guild Wars, or atleast did when it was fresh. Good amount of ladies play EVE Online. So yeah, if it a game requires a bit of thought... you'll probably find them there. I've seen some younger generation girls on CS:S a few months ago but they are almost always girlfriends or wives of the admins.

I once had a DDR mat for PS2 that was solid steel with plexiglass pads to step on that light up like the arcde machines. It never moved, it was too heavy to move around even when you did slides.

It cost way too much though and I regret buying it because the DDR fad wore off.

I think I got my DDR mat from Geeks.com when they were still $5 each and on a day they had a free shipping promo. I'm sure some poor sap working at the warehouse freaked out when they saw the size of the box the thing came in, and the fact that they would have to ship the thing for free :laugh:.

I used it with StepMania (free Windows DDR clone). Nice, cheap pseudo-DDR thrills.

We found the Nightfall CE edition for $20, so we bought 4 or 5 copies. And it's an older pic--we have Eye of the North on two of the four accounts so far, more to come soon.

My wife even has the Razor Guild Wars mouse...
 
My sis spanks my butt in Guitar Hero and DDR. She wants to play some FPS with me and my buddies, but the Dell I got her isn't great pushing the frame rates (on-board IGP). She did get into play Warcraft 3 though, we'll probably play it again over winter break.

I noticed those things too. Lots of girls I knew loved the NES and SNES, but when N64 came around they didnt like the controller (especially the analog stick) they werent keen on the 3D and it seemed like gaming dropped off with the females.
I know a few gals who have Wii's and like the bowling games and such.

I have also noticed there are pleny of women in Guild Wars (not just avatars but actual females playing on the other end).
I think it might be because there is no monthly fee so they dont feel obligated. It may also be that the graphics are excellent and the female characters look really nice.

That's what I thought, until I regularly ran into female players in Guild Wars two years ago - getting to the Hall of Heroes regularly with PUGs using Teamspeak was pretty fun until I got bored of GW after a few months. Happens to me with every game. Some in a few hours, some in a few months...

Never got into StepMania... just too lazy to set up the game with the songs 😱.

EDIT: I should actually admit, my ex (the one I complained about trying to beat me in Tekken) is the person that got me into playing DDR. I was never really a fan of it before, but she played (and played well) so I gave it a shot. Never really played often until I picked it up for the 360 though.

lmao don't feel bad I ordered the Razer GW mouse last night from Tigerdirect for $50. I wasn't happy with my G7 dropping out a lot and well I am a big GW fan even though I don't put a lot of time into it. Just have a few high teens and a lvl 20 Dervish in full Primeval.

Didn't happen to get the NF CE's at circuit city ?
 
My first gaming experience was Thief the Dark Project back in 1999. Then onward to Thief gold, and Thief Deadly Shadows, (which sorta sucked). I am still involved with Thief, and active on TTLG forum, beta testing fan missions, have done voice work, and drawn for various fan missions, and the briefing scenes.

Thievery, multi player Thieves versus Guards, and co-op game. Which is based on the UT engine, heavy on thieving and being a guard, very high learning curve.

Doom3, Arx Fatalis, Alice, Undying, Vampire Masquerade Bloodlines, which I absolutely loved that game. Bit of Silent Hill. Always on the look out for something new. War games bore me to death. I like a challenge, not too much into RPG's strictly, though Vampire is considered an RPG of sorts.

Currently playing WoP, world of padman with AnonymouseUser. 🙂 We used to run an RPG Invasion UT2k4 server together. Had a lot of fun, just needed a break from it, played that for about 3 years. I love to game, I will always be a gamer. 🙂

Seems family is a way that a lot of females get into gaming. I know my sister probably never would've played games if it wasn't for myself or my brother playing them often. She usually served as cannon fodder for our 1337ness though 😉.

You should try DDR instead of GH. Personally I enjoy DDR more so but they actually complement each other quite well. I played DDR for a bit, stopped and played GH3 then went back to DDRU2 and my ability to recognize patterns was a lot better than it was when I stopped. I'm still curious if people will hack the PC version to add songs to it... I... umm.. acquired it... to see 😉.

I got my younger sister into videogames.
First for her was Magic School Bus and Pocahontas and Putt PUtts adventure.
Eventually she made the transition to my games Full Throttle and Heroes of Might and Magic3 and Daggerfall.
Daggerfall was what made her a gamer.
To this day all she plays is RPGs and sims like roolercoaster tychoon.

My wife plays Sims2. I got her Viva Pinata because she's pregnant and bored, but she grew attached to the worms that she named and wouldn't let the birds eat them. Then she started asking philosophical questions like "wait a minute, you're raising animals...to be beaten by children with sticks?"

She'll sit and watch me play SP games cloned on our hdtv for hours though if they've got a good story. "Don't forget to quicksave!"
