Gingrich invokes Kennedy - Promises Lunar Moon Base by 2020

With what money? We are flat ass broke.

What happened to fiscal conservative?

He says he will cut the Nasa budget but doesn't say where the money will come from for these crazy plans.

Talk about Election year bullshit.

Gingrich Space Plan Promises Lunar Moon Base by 2020

The United States will have a permanent manned colony on the moon by 2020 if Newt Gingrich is in charge, the Republican presidential hopeful announced today

The former Speaker of the House made no apologies for the boldness of his amibitions, which depend primarily on the emergence of a vibrant commercial spaceflight industry.

He said the U.S. space program needs a kick in the pants like the one President John F. Kennedy gave it in 1961, when he promised to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade.

The former House speaker also implied that he would cut NASA's budget, stressing several times that he wants the space agency to be "leaner" and less bureaucratic.

The best solution would be to give Gingrich a kick in the pants, put him in a rocket and lauch him towards the moon.
He can man that base permanently, as far as I am concerned.

This reeks of a stunt of desperation. Eight years to have a base on the moon? lol. Gee Newt, what would you use to fly the materials up there? The Space Shuttle? 🙄

He says he will cut the Nasa budget but doesn't say where the money will come from for these crazy plans.
It says in the article where the money will come from, which also echos what he said in the last debate:

depend primarily on the emergence of a vibrant commercial spaceflight industry...Gingrich proposed to help spur spaceflight action by setting up a system of prizes. He would establish a $10 billion prize, for example, for the first company or entity to get astronauts to Mars.

The thing with the space program is it take long term planning and very rarely do thing last past the next administration. Once a new president comes into office they usually want to leave their mark.

We also don't like funding things that will take 20 - 30 years or more to complete.

This just newt pandering to the space workers for votes.

Got to agree with dawp. Did Newt even come up with a proposed budget for this idea or is it purely a bull session pipe dream?

Cut their budget AND get a man back to the moon - err, a BASE on the moon?! 100% of their current budget isn't enough to do that. NASA performs a lot of useful research. Cutting their budget would necessarily cut the useful work. Planning a moon base would virtually eliminate useful work in favor of useless work.

Edit: and I see Newt is going to overthrow the Castro regime... OHHhhhhhhhh, I get it. This is lip service before the primary in Florida. Desperate man he is!

Umm... how is he supposed to find the money for this plan with all of the tax cuts he's proposing? We already have a huge deficit as it is.

While he's promising things that he can never deliver on, can Gingrich also promise to pay off my underwater mortgage as well?

Can you say pander-bear. He made the speech in Brevard county (where Cape Canaveral is). He' also wants to invade Cuba (south Florida/Miami).

I hope he wins the Republican nomination.

Yep. We only made it to the moon in the first place because we wanted to beat the Russians and because the JFK assassination made people feel bad about scuttling his plans.

Re: a 10 billion dollar prize for landing people on Mars, what an idiotic idea. No private company could send a person to Mars for that much.

Nah, you don't get it. Once we have the moon base established, the Cubans can improvise rockets and reach American soil without fear of the Coast Guard.

We can no longer put a human in orbit let alone the moon...We no longer strive to achieve great things...

In the best case situation....it'll take 2 yrs minimum to formalize a concept, 1-2 years for contractor bids and awards, 5-10 years for design and test. And this would be after he would be inaugurated in 2013.

Will it be cheaper than Obama's IOU that was written/wasted?

LOL wut??

God forbid you actually criticize Newt for once instead of Obama. 🙄

Lame attempt at diversion.

Dave asked the question via the statement quoted - we are flat broke.

I offered a way out.

If Obama can find the money when we are broke; why can not Newt use the same logic?
Or is it because it was Obama doing so that the Dems will approve spending, but oppose if a Republican offers a similar package.

Both stink
