Gigabyte K8NF nForce4 issue with ps2 keyboard in XP

Hi all,

I just put together a system for family friend. It's an athlon 64 3500+ system with a K8NF nforce4 MB.

The problem is when I boot into windows the ps2 KB doesn't work. If I go to the device manager it says the driver couldn't be started. I can manually uninstall the driver and then scan for hardware. XP then sees the keyboard, installs the driver, and everything works fine until I have to reboot. Then I have to do it all over again.

I am just using the generic 101\102 key MS keyboard driver. I am also using a USB mouse. There is nothing wrong with the KB. I have tried various bios settings including enableing\disabling usb KB support. This problem is annoying, and not a huge deal for me, but will be a huge issue for the owner of this system.

Does anyone have a better workaround for this problem? I may just have to wait for a new bios from Gigabyte, or maybe new drivers.

BTW, does nvidia have a unified nforce driver that supports the nforce4 chipset?

I had the same thing happen once with a keyboard, and never did find a solution. Wish I could be more helpful - my solution ended up being spending 10 dollars for a USB keyboard..lol

I gave in..I know

I have the K8NF-9 that came with BIOS F1 installed. I used an old generic keyboard and mouse from a retired Dell computer and it worked fine right from the start using the PS2 inputs. I later switched to a logitech wireless keyboard and mouse combo also using the PS2 inputs and they worked fine right when I hooked them up, so I'm not sure what's going on with yours.

I'm using a native USB keyboard, but even after using a USB to PS/2 adapter to test.
There does seem to be a known intermittent issue with PS/2 keybooards on the current K8NF-9 though, a quick google search reveals a few people commenting on issues with PS/2 keyboards.

For now, you may need to use a PS/2 to USB adapter, until Gigabyte gets around to fixing it.

(I've passed the problem onto Gigabyte tech support)

It seems to only be an issue when you are using a ps2 keyboard and a usb mouse. I put the usb mouse on a ps2 adapter and everything worked fine. It's a simple workaround that works well, but I sure would like to know what the problem is. If anyone else could test this it would be appreciated.
