Gigabyte will have louder idle fan noise unless you BIOS mod it (very easy to do). However, it will have the best heatsink and possibly best overclockability. Also make sure it can fit in your case.

Out of those choices I'd pick the Gigabyte or MSI.

Any GTX 980 is massively overpriced for how it performs, especially now that 980 Ti and R9 390(X) are so close to being released.

G1 is awesome you can get 1500Mhz+ on the core easy. EVGA has the best warranty and service though from what I hear when the issue with 970 was the talk of the town.

P.S. I have a G1 980 here is my score for Unigine Extreme HD 1080p, overclocked.

Don't buy any of those. R9 390/390X should launch in a matter of 4-5 weeks and there will most likely be big drops on a 980. Also, to begin with 980 is a waste of $ over the 970.

Depends what you doing, it's all wax on, wax off. I myself look forward to seeing what the 390/x brings, but be aware all the other 300 series GPU are apparently just rebagged 200 cards.

I think with 390 series so close to launch, might as well wait 1-1.5 months because worst case he can still buy a 980 for $550, best case he might get a card 15-20% faster for $550 OR 980 level of performance for $450 either via a 390 card or a price cut 980. Then we have the possibility of NV's GM200 6GB retaliation. Since TW3 and Batman AK game coupons are valid until July 31st, it's not like those games will run out either.

If he wants to buy now to play TW3, I would go with a 970 instead, maybe an EVGA version and its 90-day step up. I don't see how 980 is worth $200 over the 970. And of course R9 290X with GTA V game bundle for $280 or so is also a great deal, an amazing deal in fact compared to a $500+ 980.

Then there is the $600 water-cooled R9 295X2. It's 59% faster than a 980.

Between 970, 290X, dual 290s/290Xs or dual 970s/R9 295X2, the 980 is the worst buy out right now in the $250-600 price range.

OP, if you still insist that you want a 980 no matter what, check out this review that compared 10 GTX980s in noise levels, temperatures and even has videos of how loud they are:

If I was buying a 980 I'd get an MSI. Right now though I'd wait it out and see what happens. Someone might offload their 980 for a good price and you can grab one on the cheap.

If you want to follow what I followed before buying the 970, the most valid conclusion for me was, get whichever is cheaper and in my place Asus was cheaper than MSI, EVGA and most certainly Gigabyte, so I went for that route.

On an off topic query: How better this 390X will be performance wise, in comparison with a 970/980? Just give me an approx technical figure.

It is all wide speculation from 10%-50% over the 980. Which I think is much more likely to be in the 10% range personally (mainly given the fact that we are only seeing a single card in the family/generation actually using a new card design. If the new design was really that much better than the old ones, you would have expected to see at least 2-3 cards using it and/or stripped down versions of it, but instead we get rebrands of cards that have been on the market for 2-3 years).

TW3 coupons are being bundled with GTX 970/980 only until May 31, and they are valid until July 1. You won't be able to buy a GTX 980 in 1-1.5 months and still get TW3.

Batman AK is bundled until June 30, and those codes are valid until July 31.

If he's looking for more than a 970 but the 970 as an interim card, then buying EVGA for the step up deal is a key part of that plan.
