Gigabyte 1070 FE - pull trigger?

All,

I see Gigabyte has a very nice rebate ($40) on this card until 12/31. Couple that with Discover Cash back 5% off (need to verify that Discover would consider it). I could get Gigabyte 1070 FE out the door at $319 ($379 - $40 MIR - 5% Cash Back = $319).

Worth it to pull the trigger? How long would it be relevant for?

This would be an upgrade from 7950 Twin Frozr (probably could sell it for $50 or so I think).

Ugh.... tempted but not sure if its the right move, especially since 1070 is close to 6 months old.

Once Vega drops we'll continue to see deals like this, since the market will be even more competitive. I think that's a solid deal, so if you are hurting for the performance now I wouldn't hold back. At the same time if you aren't hurting for performance right now, then you could wait and see how Vega shakes out. Really either way is going to work out fine.

How long the 1070 will be relevant for is anyone's guess! Mine is that the FE cards were always a blatant rip off, but if you could get it for $319 then that would be acceptable. It is your choice, it would be a massive performance increase over your good old AIB 7950, just remember that the FE cards can get hot and loud, if you could get an AIB for the same price, then that I think would be a better deal. I would almost always go for that over the reference cards from nVIdia, unless you need blower type GPU.

:( Ugh... I guess I will wait.... my 7950 performance is OK. I am getting Medium settings on newer games (Doom).

To be fair we don't know when vega will be out and last we heard it sounds around 5ish months if the h1 of 2017 remains true.

Pay a little extra and get a better cooler. I wouldn't bother waiting for Vega or anything amd has unless you have a freesync display. Otherwise no point in getting caught in the amd waiting game. The wait is not worth the reward

I don't have a freesync monitor.... I am really thinking about pulling the trigger on RX480 8GB... Probably MSI, maybe GTR.

At $319? yes well worth it.
Since everyone gave you a recommendation before asking.... :( what resolution are you using, 1080p?
If so, yes a gtx1070 will last you a few years.

A 1070 at sub $350 is a decent deal. I would however spend $350 on an AIB 1070 over an FE 1070 at $320 unless you need the blower.

This card right here is a thing of beauty: https://www.amazon.com/XFX-RX-480P836BM-Radeon-3Displayport-PCI-Express/dp/B01KCWZ0DM/ref=sr_1_6?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1482951904&sr=1-6&keywords=rx+480+8gb

For $242 you are getting a card that will hold its own in 1080p for years to come and will most likely perform equal to, or outperform the 1070 in the coming years in most future DX12/Vulkan powered games. How do I know this? Well let's just say I have history to back me up.

In DX12/Vulkan games these scenarios are beginning to emerge:

R9 390/X/RX480>970/980

R9 Fury X>980Ti/1070

Now after an onslaught of driver improvements by team red, the RX470 trading blows with 970/980 cards, remember the 1060 is a modern 6GB 980, so any RX470/80 with 8GB will be a great investment if you are concerned about value.

NO way will a 480 even come close to a gtx1070,ever, that's a blatant lie.
The 1070 is at least 32% faster than a 480.
Please don't show us 1 game that heavily favors AMD's cards that is close.
A gtx1060 still outperforms a 480 by 4% and a 1060 overclocked vs a fully overclocked 480 by 7% in 98 out of 100 titles.

WHat cpu is the OP using? what resolution? Without this information, there is no real way to recommend anything.

I bought the Nitro R9 Fury for $239 (MIR $20 + $21 Tax at Amazon :(, I had $335 gift cards). 99% chance I will be gaming in 1080P, off chance I use my PC, I will use 1440.

The FE card will overclock just as high as AIB cards. Who cares how hot it runs as long as it's built to sustain the heat?

Right now there is a Watch Dogs 2 promotion for 1070 cards are you going to get it with the FE? If yes then it's a no brainer. If no then buying an AIB will cost the same.

These deals are so important to consider as they change the entire dynamic of value. I sold Gears of War 4 to a friend for $45 so the 1070 ended up being better value for money than an RX 480 for me. As far as I know there are no such deals for the 480.

Went with a Nitro R9 Fury

That's still a great 1080/1440p card and a great deal, it's faster than the 480 and is close to the 980Ti/1070 in newer titles, what a steal, a HBM card for under $250! It will serve you well!

No game came with it. As far as I know.
It doesn't have to come with it you just redeem it from the Nvidia website by giving info regarding your purchase. That's what I did with my Zotac 1070. I just looked it up and it seems the deal is still live for all 1070 cards bought after November 22.

Anyways the Fury is a great card just don't expect it to have the legs that your 7950 had.

A blatant lie? Are we overreacting just a bit? The GTX 780/Ti vs R9 290/x debacle says hello!
My prediction still stands, remember Pascal still doesn't do async as well as GCN and future titles will most likely favor GCN in that regard, with zero Pacal driver support the moment Volta hits the market, and my prediction may very well pan out to be true.

Ugh, I cancelled.... I just don't see the longevity.... I am really looking for a card that last 3 years or longer. I am not really big on power hunger cards either, I do have a 750W PSU.

I think you mean $339 for the Fury, there are no R9 Fury's on Amazon for under $300. did you mean a rx 480?

Gotta link?
