So it's a diesel 🙂 Well, color me interested!

You don't like it.

What, are you the most insecure man on the intertubes? My opinion doesn't matter a hill of beans in timbuktu 🙂 What matters is if it makes you happy. Besides, I might not like the looks of that particular BMW model, but it's still a BMW, and I really like their engineering and the fact that they really make great driver's cars. I've never been behind the wheel of a BMW that didn't have a planted, organically tactile feel to it.

The cost of diesel reduces it's desirability for me.

If diesel engines didn't cost more, and diesel fuel didn't cost more, it would be a no brainer.

Same could be said for a hybrid except for the high gas cost.

I guess, but let's say in theory you get the 57 Mpg throughout the entire tank (I know you won't, I'm just extrapolating the reasoning for diesel) you have a range of 770 Miles. I could use this vehicle to commute 30 miles return for almost 14 days. Is it still more expensive than gas?

OK, I went HERE and chose the New England Diesel price of $2.58 a gal. it would work out using the numbers I made up above to cost me $2.50 a day in fuel. That sounds pretty good to me. I bet that would beat most gas powered cars and challenge quite a few hybrids. 🙂

Diesel here in Sask, Canada is usually par with gas bounces around either side of gasoline.
Just need a NA/Jap car with diesel, cause I can't pay those German maintenance costs!

Very nice to get that power and still pull that mileage.

Diesel here is running about 40% more expensive than gas, but I do remember, at least in Canuckistan, when it was cheaper.
Gawd, I'll never understand how you people shift with your left hand!
Yep, it's wrong. Most people are right-handed and I think it makes sense to shift with right.

Well, which is more important .. shifting or steering? I think it's a wash as long as you're reasonably coordinated. I ran about in a 1962 Super 7 once, right hand drive, and had no issue.

Keep in mind that he's in the UK, where diesel is roughly on par with gas (petrol 😉), but both are far more expensive than our fuel in North America.

If you're paying the same price per gallon, it makes sense to drive a diesel, which is almost twice as efficient. Thus there are a lot of diesel vehicles in the UK.

QFT. In the States, it makes far less sense. I figured out that a diesel car would have to get 45mpg or so combined, to equal the operating cost of a 33mpg combined gasoline car.

Dallas TX average 87 gas 02-03-09 : $1.70
Dallas TX average diesel 02-03-09 : $2.30

uk 335d gets 42.2 mpg 'extra urban'
us 335d gets 36 mpg 'highway'
that's about a 15% decrease, which is odd considering the US gallon is ~17% smaller than the imperial gallon, and on gasoline cars the US emissions equipment usually kills mileage

At the moment, diesel seems to be closer in price than usual to gasoline. My guess is that it won't be for long as prices rise. Right now, it looks like a break even deal for me, so still no reason to go diesel unless I love the car.

It's not odd! 42.2/36 = ~17%, so there's your diff; UK gets 42.2 on an imperial and US gets 36 on a US.
