Diesel here is running about 40% more expensive than gas, but I do remember, at least in Canuckistan, when it was cheaper.
Gawd, I'll never understand how you people shift with your left hand!
Yep, it's wrong. Most people are right-handed and I think it makes sense to shift with right.

You get use to it mate.

I'm right handed and shift fine with my left. But if I was to shift with my right hand it wouldn't be as smooth. I'd rather my 'strong' 😛 hand on the wheel 😛

I'm mot a fan of the look of the 1 series personally. Just looks too short, but then I'm not a fan of most hatchbacks.

But the E46 M3 is bad ass 😀

Side note. I saw an E90 M3 and it looked WELL WEIRD. The 18" wheels looked small, or was the tyres he had on so thick it made the alloys just look rubbish? The 'powerhood' looks weird in person, and literally just bolted on, reminded me of a dolphin. I saw it at the petrol station.

I don't mind the exterior too much, its unique(at least compared to the stuff here). The interior however is really not up to my standards, then again it is an entry level BMW.

I think you need to sit in it. There is no difference between this and the 3 series. There is really no perceptible difference between this and my M3, if I'm honest, apart from my car's Nappa leather.

It isn't really 'entry level' as this car retailed at just under £28,000 ($39,000) after options 10 months ago. 😛

We could have saved a ton of money, too 😀, but she's not in the market for that, and I don't really need two!

0-60 in under 7.5 seconds is fast enough for her. The Clio did it in something like 11.5, so it will be like night and day.

Unless you're completely ham-fisted it doesn't take much dexterity (at least as far as you hand and arm is concerned) to change gear, and as has been mentioned, I'd much rather my stronger and more dextrous hand on the wheel while I'm shifting.

If you stuff a gear up big whoop, if you let the wheel slip on a bump or it 'tramlines' you could drift into oncoming traffic or something stationary. That may be an big deal.

That makes more sense to me 😉

EDIT: Sweet car OP

Exterior - ugh..
Interior - not bad at all... I was recently in an '09 328i and that interior was completely underwhelming. This looks slightly better than that from the pic surprisingly.
Price - ugh... these entry levels and the 3s are way too expensive out-the-door for what they are. Exactly how I felt when I drove it too. I'd much rather fork out < $10k more for the 5s, but I know why they do it.

Yeah, this. I regularly drive on the right and shifting with my right hand is no problem after the first couple of miles.

My GF isn't interested in the 5 series. She's 5ft tall, tiny, she didn't want a boat to ride to work in 😀

I'm just saying for the price you could get a whole lot more, but I know why people prefer BMWs. Still a lot to be said for value though.

I'm not sure about that. If you option up a 5 to the same spec as this car you'll be looking at quite a bag of cash more.

Anyhow, It's nice to have a garage full of one make now. 🙂

It's actually not hard at all. I'm American, and spent 5 months in Australia last year. I rented a car a few times and never had a problem getting used to shifting with my left hand. The patterns are still the same, you're just using a different hand. I'm also right handed.

Yeah I know mate. Prices have plummeted! I'll look to pick one up for ~ £13-14k in 2010 after selling the S2k. Hopefully the insurance will be cheaper by then!

My old car Vauxhall Astra 1.4, 96reg, took about 15seconds to hit 0-60mph 😛

It'll definately be fun to drive and a huge step up for her. Most cars are pretty uninspiring until you drop some £££ imo.

Just a different market segment.

The 3 coupe look good imo, but I wouldn't get either unless it was an M3. The 5 series is too big imo for me (personal taste) but they are more roomy then the 3 series. But the M5 is where it's at!

<- E46 M3 obssessed!

Never driven one then, I guess?

Driving one doesn't make it look better.

This.

As an owner of two BMWs, the driving experiance still does not fix the fugly 🙂.

Well this is always in the eye of the beholder and we both like it.
