GF4MX versus competitors like GF3 and Radeon

I like the look of this GF4MX bundle here: MSI GF4MX440 review
It's got a good game bundle- Sacrifice, NOLF and Aquanox CDs- which is worth something to me. Hard to express in $ exactly, but say the GF4MX comes out at two-thirds the price of the GF3 Ti200 after that...
Question is, what will I be missing by not buying a GF3 Ti200. The nature demo of 3D Mark 2001 is supposed to look good but I'm not sure if having programmable shaders on such a card is going to be worth it for the one year I'll probably have it, playing "class of 2001" games (if I were going to buy many new releases I'd be prepared to pay more for the videocard in the first place). The most demanding I'll play is probably 10x7 with Quincunx anyway.
Actually, is a GF4MX even necessary? I'm thinking a Radeon 7500 might even do. The 7500 has various good points, I'm just wary about the drivers. They've had over a year and a half to get them right though, what are they like now?
Isn't there anyone who's used a GF4MX that has anything good to say about it? Basically my choice is between 7500, GF4MX and GF3Ti200.

How much would you be willing to spend?

I would recommend against the GF4MX at all costs, spend more and get a Ti-200... or a Radeon 8500.... or wait and get a GF4Ti 4200...

I agree 100% with zsouthboy, forget about the GF4MX because IMO it's just a marketing ploy and it's not much better than the old GF2 MX.

You don't seem to have read the review or had a GF4.
I agree it's all down to money though. I can get a Radeon 7500 for half the price of a GF2 Ti200 off someone. I'm concerned with current performance rather than snobbery over features not even showcased in real games I've got.

I will have a Geforce 4 MX440 on the 28th and should have the review done in about a week after that I will be comparing it with a Geforce 3 Ti 200, Geforce 3, and Geforce 3 @ 250/550 so maybe that will help you when I finish it. It will be at OCModShop

Heheh... it's kinda weird that they would include Aquanox in a game bundle with the geforce4mx considering that this is the same game that my oc'd geforce3 ti200 @ 200/450 could barely handle at 35-40fps...

And remember, the geforce4mx is slower than a geforce3... don't reccomend it...

I just got myself a Leadtek GF4MX440 and its worth an upgrade from the MSI GF2MX. It sure has better 2d than the MSI and come with 4ns Samsung(vs Nvidia spec 200MHz DDR). I can easily oc'ed it to 320/480 for some extra juice out of it. But I do think that anyone who want to have all eye-candy stuff turn on shouldnt get this card. Its too slow for the purpose.

I'm in the same boat that giocopiano is in, in that I'm looking to buy a new video card as soon as my tax return comes within the next two weeks. I'm not considering the GF4MX at all, but I can't decide between the Radeon 8500, GF3 Ti200, or just a regular GF3. I really don't want to wait till the GF4 Ti4200 comes out, so it's between these 3. I'm hoping to get the cheapest, so which is better in your experience, the 8500 or Ti200??

From what I'd seen, the GeForce4 MX440 lies between the GeForce2 Ti and the GF3 Ti200. It looks like decent value for current performance, but since the Ti200 has more features, it should be slowed down less by games making use of the new technologies.

I don't upgrade that often. Had to upgrade my Voodoo3 to play Quake 3, and I guess my current Radeon will be replaced when I see a game that plays much nicer on a new card (the new Doom maybe). I'd go for the GeForce3 Ti200, but if you're the sort who upgrades every year then on current games I reckon the MX440 looks best for price/performance.

The nFinite engine would take a year or two before it become standard, pretty much like the early days for T&L.

<< You don't seem to have read the review or had a GF4. >>

well i never had a gf4... but i have read the reviews from anand and tomshardware. from anand's review:
We can't feel more than a little disappointed by the GeForce4 MX however. The $99 GeForce4 MX 420 will be a good replacement for the current GeForce2 MX, and the $149 GeForce4 MX 440 may be justifyable but the $179 MX 460 makes very little sense to us. Even the 440 could use some more justification in order for it to make perfect sense to the user that does care about gaming. Our recommendation is to stay away from the MX 460 and wait a few more weeks for the GeForce4 Ti 4200; pay the extra $20 and gain full DirectX 8 pixel and vertex shader support as well as two additional rendering pipelines.

and from tom's review:
Unfortunately, the 'GeForce4' name isn't very helpful and will cause a lot of confusion. While all GeForce3 cards sport the vertex shader feature ('nfiniteFX'), GeForce4 will not be so straightforward. The effect of this is that GeForce3 cards are actually far more advanced than GeForce4 MX cards! Be aware of that!

While GeForce4 Ti is the pinnacle of today's mainstream 3D chip technology, GeForce4 MX is a mere advance of GeForce2 MX technology. GeForce4 MX does not contain any nfiniteFX-engine and, therefore, no full DirectX 8.x functionality, either.

but tom doesn't give it too ba da review, becuz it score decent in todays games. but keep in mind "Still, none of the GeForce4 MX cards has full DirectX 8.x support, because of its lack of vertex and pixel shaders." shell out the extra $20 for the ti200. or hit gateway's website and try to stuff the visiontek gf3 ti200 ($185) plus an extra $15 of other stuff... then use the $50 off $200 coupon. then mail in the visiontek $50 MIR. u will be a happy camper 😀

You mentally challenged???????

I'd say if your looking for a decent budget card the GF3 TI200 wins easily. Go to hot deals and find the gateway deal. You spend $150 out of pocket for a GF3 TI200 and you can get 50-70 bucks back in rebates. Even if you don't oc the card you get similar performance to the GF4mx and future support for games. The other option if you really want to get a newer card is to wait for the GF4 TI4200 and get all the new bells and whitsles. The GF4mx's are too handicaped, especially as the new games come out.

And why buy a videocard for just a year? I don't think the GF4 will drop all that quickly in price and the GF3 is the budget choice with the current deals on it. The only way I'd go with the GF4mx is if I needed the dual monitor support and then I'd think about putting the cost of a game or two into the video card. I tend to keep mine much longer than a year.

'Finally upgrading his GF 256 to a GF3 ti200'

(I was talking to Beatles.)
Sorry, in Europe for now, they use the Euro here and no rebates.
I've never ever lasted a year without getting a new videocard. How can you frequent forums like these and stay with old tech? 😛

<<the $149 GeForce4 MX 440 >>
I saw posted on somewhere for $105, not sure of the brand though. I bought mine for $110 (A170 DDR T) after conversion. Its $70 not $20 difference.

<< The MX would be a nice option if it cost 70 bucks, not 170. >>

Look on pricewatch.com

The Geforce 4 MX 440 is now $96

giocopiano- I got caught making several other electronics purchases that absorbed my spare cash, plus I got married and bought a house. I used my upgrade money for a PS2, 5.1 stereo, a cpu/mb upgrade, a new monitor and a couple other little things over the last 2.5 years. In retrospect though the several k engagement ring is what really did it. She loves it though 🙂 The old GF 256 still performed decently in most games, (I guess I'm used to just playing at around 30 fps) but recent games have made me turn down the detail options too much. It's still doing well for CS and Q3A, its just things like MoH and Serious Sam 2 that made me want to upgrade.

I guess if you can find the MX440 for around $100 shipped its not a bad deal, but with the current deal to be had on the GF3 TI200 I still think its the better choice. And rather than spend $150 on the MX460 I'd definitely go with any of the better quality GF3. If you bought a new card within the last year, why not wait for the GF4 4200? It's got the best price/performance of any of the new cards and with the GF4 core and 128 megs of ram, it should last you at least 12 maybe even 18 months 😉

I am also wondering about the geforce 4 MX 440 as a budget upgrade from a flaky Visiontek GTS 32 MB. I got it from compgeeks a few months ago and am convinced it was an oem "factory 2nd". And while I would love a geforce 3 or GF3 Ti200, the Aopen Geforce 4 MX 440 is available for $105 plus $7 shipping from newegg.com while their cheapest GF3 Ti 200 is $143 + $7 shipping. Is it worth the extra $40 for Direct X 8 support and a 100 MHz slower clock speed? Keep in mind, I am not sure I can justify the $112 much less the $150 to my loving wife who just doesn't get why I need to replace parts in computers that are working just fine the way they are! I figure I can probably auction off my old GTS and MX card for about half of what the GF 4 MX440 goes for, so I would probably only have to come up with $60 or so for the GF4 MX. Comments? FWIW, it would probably go into a MSI-6309/Celeron 900 @ 1.08 Ghz system with 384 mb of PC-133 ram.

no i'm not, but maybe u need to learn how to read. first u need to go get hooked on phonics... then practice ur newfound skillz and read a gf4 review.

The performance of the GeForce4 MX440 and 460 cards, however, proved to be very impressive. Especially the GeForce4 MX460, which is able to score results as high as those of the GeForce3 Ti200, or even the Ti500 cards. Both are able to beat ATi's Radeon 7500 in most cases.

so next time instead of trying to be smartass.... or dumbass... pull ur head out of your arse and read. it's fundamental.

well, if you buy GF4MX440 you better be ready to uninstall DirX8(.1) and drop back to 7.0 because this
board doesn't support it. there are new threads all over the net that machines will not boot past Windows
screen or get error messages. another nightmare nvidia has dumped on an unsuspecting public.

as far as benches, here is what you want.

Where did you get the info?
Im dual-booting WinME/XP with DX8.1 on both system running fine and stable. No BSOD or whatever problem. Drivers-Det27.20, card-Leadtek A170 DDR T.
