I've heard lots of good things about the Sorento. There's at least one member here that has one.
Oh, and like I said before, station wagons kick ass. What did you have, one of the old american land beasts? My mid-size wagon has room for everything you mentioned.

Yeah... it was one of those Olsmobile 9-passenger TANKS! it was great for carrying stuff but I felt like the Griswalds in "Vacation"

I had an escort wagon too but I do like sitting up higher... A minivan is my second choice but I wanted something a bit "sportier" I guess... not the typical mommy-van

i love my '04 nissan xterra; it's great but for a family car, i might suggest nissan pathfinder or armada.

My fiancee's Mom has one and it's pretty nice but she even said that if she could do it over again she'd get a hyundai tucson.
 
I like the Subaru Forrester, which I have 🙂. The Outback/Legacy wagon is nicer than the Forrester, a bit more expensive too.

SUVs have been typical mommy-vans for the last decade.

if you want something sporty, get a BMW 540 wagon.

I wasn't saying the Subaru was great offroad, just saying that 95% of SUVs are just horrible off road.

I'd put my Outback against a Explorer or a Yukon any day in an offroad challange

The Kia Sorento is not bad, but I would recommend a more refined and reliable model from a Japanese manufacturer.

You really want a mini-van for that kind of usage, otherwise maybe a Honda Pilot, Nissan Murano or Toyota Highlander (not the 3row). The Mazda MPV may be worth checking out, since it is a little smaller, but the Odyssey and Sienna are the 2 best minivans.

The Envoy is probably the ugliest vehicle GM produces. I was driving behind one, hungover, and that vehicle was seriously contributing to my nausea.

I'd say look for an off lease Highlander in the best condition w/ the lowest miles that's available in your price range.

You should be able to pick up an '03 or '04 for around $20k with under 40,000 miles on it.
That's barely broke in. They have a very functional amount of space, some of the best visibility I've seen in an SUV, and also one of the safest vehicles on the road.
