Getting the cat into a carrier?

I've got a fighter. Was supposed to take the cat to the vet yesterday but couldn't get her in the case. Any suggestions? (keeping the cat intact please). I have a bad back and I have to do this by myself.

I heard there are carriers which open from the top? I'm going to try and find a bigger top opener, and see if I can manage that.

Can you get your hands on the cat at some point when he/she is calm?

If so scruff it behind the head with your dominant hand and over the hips with your other hand (you'll be cross-handed). Place cat in carrier you've stood on end with the door open ahead of time. Release cat and shut door ASAP.

Not very fun for either party, but works as a last resort and won't harm the cat.

Get a carrier that breaks in half when you open it (like a suitcase). That's a little easier.

...zip-tie the cat's feet together? ;)

Can you put some tuna or something inside the carrier to lure the cat into it?

Wrap the cat in a towel and dump it into the carrier.
My cat was the biggest fighter and I just picked him up and shoved him into the thing, stiff-arming be damned.

Good idea. The good old Kitty Burrito approach. ;)

Yeah, I guess the opening for the carrier is too small and gives the cat too much purchase.

A top loader with a bigger opening and a towel is my best bet. I have to make sure I wrap her up tight and cover her head, which I didn't do last time.

They're too smart. They can intuit exactly what's going on by your body language. Once I lock her up in the bathroom she knows exactly what's going on. She starts to howl (this is a cat who never cries)- it's sad, pathetic and sort of funny at the same time.

My cat is to damn fast for that....this is what I do. I put a string through the back cat carrier and tie his catnip filled mouse to it. I pull the mouse into the cage and he follows it in everytime. :)

Nice!! Would work well for me, if I didn't have 9... ;)

Maybe if I isolated the one I was trying to bag...

We have a top loader, it is fairly decent to use. I would suggest the towel meathod too.

Now if we can only get one of the cats to quit having explosive diareah when traveling...

Oh lord. Last time I tried to get her in the carrier she was so terrified she lost control of her bowels. So sad...

This thread is too funny, my cat LUVs his carrier.

My secret: Use the carrier to store any new cat toys you haven't given the cat yet, cat nip, treats, stuff like that. Keep the carrier someplace the cat can walk past and see inside it. In no-time the cat will learn to luv the carrier.

Some weekends i clear out all the stuff inside, place it on the sofa and let the cat climb inside(no need to close or lock it). Then 1-2 hours later i POUR the cat out and put it back. Cat sounds like a motorboat when playing in the carrier.

We generally have to put it on its end and drop the cat into it because they don't like em!

I have a crazy insane cat. She's adopted and we think she's part siamese based on her horrible temper. Most times I can just pick her up and put her in (yes top loaders are easier).

She got out the other night, and she was hellaciously mean when she came back. Wouldn't let me touch her, was attacking the other animals. And she's not declawed. Seeing as this was 2 in the morning, I had to wake my wife up. I put on a big overcoat and some gloves. I got my wife to sidetrack her because she was swatting ferociously whenever i came near, and I picked her up by the nape of the neck with one hand and used my other hand to grab her by the stomac and put her in on her back gently.

I tried using a towel, but she was swiping too hard to get the towell close. When I picked her up...I've never heard an animal scream like that before. She was insane.

Good luck...and as I said, the top loaders are a lot easier.

hmm my parents cat is a fighter too... take her by the scruff of the neck, and just place her in... when you hold them there (back of the neck), you've got full control of them.
