Sure but airport "security" is a joke. People could put the stuff inside a keychain token or charm, for example and these just get put in the basket while they walk through the metal detector.

Unfortunately thats true. Put the thing in a carry on and it wouldn't be too difficult to get it through. The X-ray machine would just show a solid spherical mass. Like a TSA employee would have any clue what it is. Unless of course the x-rays made it react like this!
