It all depends really. Working as a Supervisor I make $23/hour with a 15% bonus potential. I work 8 hour days and anything over 8/day or 40/week is overtime. In contrast my sales manager makes salary, but he works 10 hour days and has no potential for overtime. He makes more money than me but when you break it down on an $/hour worked basis I dont think its too different.

boo. :disgust: maybe i shouldnt take the job.

i only sent out 3 resumes, and got a job already. Maybe I should take my chances and keep sending out more resumes and hope my luck continues.

Man you are lucky, I've sent out like 100 resumes to everything from IT, Electrical engineering (all areas), and even paper-pushing jobs *gasp* and I got like maybe 10 calls back. Btw, I have a Bachelor's of Science in EE and I accepted a corporate job where I am a paper-pusher for $35k/year. Consider yourself luckier than most of us up here in Northern CA you ungrateful bastard :D

But seriously, congrats and good luck.

depends on the job, I guess.

at my last job, we got paid vacation, but otherwise, the only hours we got paid for were the hours that we worked.

the office was closed the day after the big blackout last summer, and I lost a day's pay because of it... and whenever the manager decided to close up early (usually days before big holidays), I'd be short a few hours.

 to no real world experience.

Salary is better IMO ... and yes, you get screwed most of the time.

It depends upon the companies policies. I'm salaried and I'm paid very well. Sometimes I have to put in a bunch of extra hours, but then sometimes I can take off in the middle of the afternoon to go see a baseball game so it all works out for me. Ask them about comp-time/flex time and any other policies they may have.

Take the first job (first non-lowball job) and while you are working and making moneys, send out resumes. Having a job will not hurt you at all. Some people say that if you take a crappy first job, that you are screwed for life. They are stupid. Just because you had a job, doesn't mean you have to put it on your resume.

My understanding:

Salary: Work until your work is done. Some weeks you work 8 hrs, some weeks you work 60 hrs. In both circumstances you get paid the same. You get nice vacation leave/holiday bonus/other company goodies.

Hourly: Paid by hour, get overtime pay. Generally not very good benefits. Some weeks where there isnt much work, you dont get any money. The overall annual income is generally less than if you had a salary at the same company for the same position (even considering OT pay)

Myself, I get paid by the hour, work 42-48hrs a week, and get 5 days paid vacation per 6 months; and paid sick leave whenever i need it as long as I work more than 50% if the time I am sick per week.
I dont have my BS.ChE yet tho. Just a 3rd year student at 5 year university.

Edit: Oh yeah, where I work, Salary = more say in stuff. Hourly = little to no say.

I think most importantly is put your foot in the door first to gain some experience. After like 1 year or so, you should be able to find a better job.

I work salary now. I work 45-60 hours a week with no overtime or any kind of compensation. My salary is also about $15,000 lower than the job that I left and I dont much like it here anymore. So, I am looking for a new job. Overall, I would probably rather have salary than hourly though.

Yeah I get hourly and vacation when needed. I take a friday here and there off so no biggie. I like the flexibility with my money. I wouldnt mind salary either but it would depend on the job.

i'm salaried, but not exempt for overtime. So, if I work 50 hours, I get paid my salary plus 10 hours of overtime, but if I work 28 hours, I still get paid for 40

:D best system evar

Same here. I am paid for 38 3/4 hours whether I work it or not and then a regular hourly rate for the next 1 1/4 hours and then time and 1/2. Works out nice especially when there is a problem like the mainframe melts down.

I'm a salaried software developer.
Our application support guys are all hourly(they all work 8-5) and many of them make more money than I do because they work the on call system. If they get called in after hours, they get an automatic 4 hours of pay even if they are only here for 10 minutes. Since that off hours call is on top of their regular 40 hours of work, that 4 hours pay is at 1.5 times the regular rate. On sundays, it's 2x their regular pay.

Most of them get called in once or twice a week. So if they get called in twice in one week, even if it's only for 10 minutes each time, they end up with at least 8 hours of 1.5 OT in addition to their standard 40 hours for the week. They all get the same holidays and vacation as me also.

So in my case, yeah, it sucks to be salary. I'm designing and developing the software apps and the guys who just have to help the users figure out how to use it correctly make more money than I do.

The truth about salary is that if you are working 1 hour a week you are most likely going to be the first guy fired. The business is going to try to get you to work as much unpaid overtime as they can.
