getting paid hourly or salary?

KydLynx

Senior member
so i just graduated with my BA and have a job offer from a company for a salary position.

they did not give me any info about if its an hourly rate, which I assume its not?

so my question is, do people that make a base salary and work over time get compensated for working overtime? or are they screwed?

i live in CA and i thought there was a rule that any and all work over 40hr/week is mandatory OT pay?

if this is not true, what are the benefits of getting a base salary over hourly, if any?

thanks my peeps!

All depends on the company and their policies.

It's my understanding that if you're on salary you're the company's bitch....if you have to stay late to get work done you won't make any more $$.

A good company will allow you comp time if you need to work extra hours.

You are considered a professional, at that means in a crunch, getting the work done. If the company expects your workload to exceed a decent work week continually, then you need to work on some type of adjustment/compensation.

Some companies and/or states may require that you get paid for that actual hours that you put in.

boo. :disgust: maybe i shouldnt take the job.

i only sent out 3 resumes, and got a job already. Maybe I should take my chances and keep sending out more resumes and hope my luck continues.

Your understanding must be limited then.

There are benefits to both methods of compensation.
You have to weigh the situation specific options and see which is better.

On the flip side, at times there wont be much work for you to do, and you get paid to surf the net!

pffft. not when youre the "right hand man". salary kicks ass:thumbsup:

really just all depends on what youre doing/who you work for.

depends.

hourly they can always cut your hours when times get rough.

salary = you're already bought and paid for so we squeeze as much as we can before you crack.

Salary means you get pay to get the job done, no matter how many hours you put in.

Hourly means you will get pay 1.5 your normal rate if you go over 40 hours per week.

Ask the company that how many hours per week a person at your positition will have to work. Then you do the math and see if it is worth it.

If you can get the salary with overtime option (I think it is salary with exception position), it will be the best of both world.

True... it really does depend on the situation.

So far, salary has been horrible for me. My best experiences have been when I've been hourly employee or hourly contract.

so far, one of the good things is 3 weeks PTO right off the bat, which i think is pretty cool.

i'll probably take it.

yah, only bad thing about salary is you cant really leave work at work sometimes. i think i just got really lucky and have the best boss in the world. that and i deserve it for the being a fantastic worker.😉

I got it pretty good. Hourly, with the same vacation benefits of the salaried people here. I'm scheduled for 40 hour work weeks, but get overtime when needed. (Side projects for out team.)

I never understood why they didn't just make me salary? I mean, what would they have to lose? I'm glad they didn't, but other people here that do almost the same exact thing are salary.

That?s not reality, I've worked salary for the past 5 years and it?s been better for me then when I was hourly. It really helps out when/if you need to take a half day to take care of things, every company I've worked for won't deduct that half day of pay being that you're salary. If I work an extra day on the weekend then I expect and get a comp day for this, but this is only a rare occasion. You don't have to worry about being exactly back on time from lunch, or if you're a few mins late from time to time it won't be recorded and potentially held against you for reviews. There are plenty of advantages to being salary and I'd have to say if I were ever given the choice in the future, I'd hands down go with salary.
