Getting my first car...

I'm turning 17 on the 29th, so my parents are gonna be getting me a car worth at the most $6K. Not a fortune, but I'm thinking I can get something that's fine for me driving to school and work daily. I live in Princeton, NJ (08540), so something that handles snow would be nice too, but definetly not a SUV/Truck, I'd like to stick to a sedan with decent MPG as well.

Any specific cars that I should be looking at that are known for reliability at this price? What kind of year would I be able to get without having crazy miles on it?

I found a Jetta nearby, its a '01, with 90K miles, automatic, for $6K. Any word on Jetta reliability over the years?

Also, are CarFax reports found to be worth the money?

They are good vehicles, but repair cost get significantly more expensive as they get older. Stick with a Honda or Toyota like Burdell said, they're more dependable.
 
Honda Civic, Acura Integra - parts are widely available and pretty much everything is made for them since so many people customize them
 
I'd go with a domestic. You can get a newer vehicle that'll be just as reliable, and it'll be much cheaper to fix when it breaks (and all $6k cars break at some point).

 
I wouldn't pay the markup you would for buying a honda/toyota. Stick with a ford or chevy and you will get more bang for your buck.
 
You're going to want something reliable and something that has cheap, widely available parts. Try a Honda Civic or an older (mid to late 90s) Japanese car.

 
NA cars in that price later than 2000 are pretty, good Honda/Toyota's used are premium priced so you have to go older, usually have less features.

Whatever you pick, go to www.mycarstats.com to find out what has been reported wrong with whichever model your looking at including TSB's and recalls
 
SLCentral - what have your parents recommended? Since they're buying it, that's important to know 😉

Most kids who post this, end up getting whatever their parents recommend. AT'ers love to flock in with their favvorite brand though 😀
