My gf was telling me how much a wedding will probably cost us and now I feel like I can't get married till I'm 35. Those of you who are married, how the hell did you afford it?

We did it CHEAP and it still cost $4000 for only like 35 people. We had a outdoors wedding in a rose park. Turned out great.

You try to cut costs as much as you can, just remember if you wait until you can afford to get married, then you never will...

Well I'm getting married in July, and how we can afford it is...

Only immediate family are invited to the ceremony. We are using a marriage commissioner. The ceremony with take place in my parents yard.

For our "reception" we are having a bbq on the following Sat. and inviting all our friends to a party. Totally casual! Our mom's and our mom's friends are cooking up a ham, turkey, roast and we are having buns and cold cuts and salad.

Our only real expense is going to be the alcohol but probably looking at about 1500-2000 for that. I'm not wearing a formal wedding dress so no major cost there.

But not everyone wants a wedding like ours...they need the big formal galla! And yes that can be pricey! My fiance's sil and bro just got married last Sept. and it cost them 30 grand! They are still paying it off! Dumb!

That's what I'll be doing.

I refuse to pay $10k+ for a "dream wedding". It's my fuggin wedding. It's my fuggin day. I'd rather spend that sort of money on a kick ass honeymoon than on uncle franks 10+ glasses of wine and clothing that doesn't even belong to me.

home grown weddings are fun...

just decide that you will have a non-traditional wedding and things will get a lot cheaper.

She won't accept a cheap wedding...and I don't want to really give her one. Just seems like I'll have to take a freakin loan out for the thing.

Bargain shopping.

Believe it or not, my wife and I found a bunch of good deals for wedding decorations on e-Bay. She got her dress at a significantly reduced price, had the wedding at a church, we were also fortunate enough to have her aunt (whose a cake decorator) make our wedding cakes. All told we spent around $3000 on the wedding but saved probably another $5,000 or so through bargain hunting.

If I had to do it again, I would have just gone to a resort and gotten married. Unfortunately, my family was pissy about our relationship (we are a mixed couple) and I felt the need to have a full-blown wedding to show them that we are serious, not going to hide, and that they'd better accept us for what we are.

Tell her she can either spend all the money on one huge day of stress and agony, or she can have 2 weeks in hawaii getting the princess treatment.

between 10K and 50K for the typical in a church wedding. Usually boils down to how many guests you have.

News flash...

Even if you have a big expensive wedding, you still have to give city hall their $8, that is for the actual marriage license itself. :D

BTW, Thumper honestly wants a nice big wedding, but we can't afford it.

:(

So it will be a small gathering of family and friends, mostly paid for by parents.

Cheap is relative....

We are flying down to antigua(US Virgin Islands) and staying a resort down there. Airfare, room, food, drinks, snacks, activitivies, and all fee's associated with the wedding are going to cost us just under $4000. Not *too* bad for having a very romantic wedding on the beach and then an excellent place to honeymoon afterwards. No hastles either! The only planning we have to do is go in the day before we get married and pick out our flowers and type of cake we want.

Woohoo!

I told her I wasn't paying for it, because it was the father of the bride's responsibility. She said he wasn't going to pay, so then the wedding became only what she could afford, which wasn't much. Then her dad stepped in at the last minute and she went along with whatever he was willing to spend.

We ended up getting divorced two years later and I'm very happy that I didn't spend a dime, other than the tux rental and the hotel room, to get married. Granted my parents sent us on a honeymoon, but that was their choice. Had they not, who knows where we would have gone.
