Getting LASIK done TODAY

Wish me luck!!

weird thing is, i'm getting it done around 3pm, which should get me home around 5... then they want me to sleep until sat. morning, so they got me Ambien sleeping pills... supposed to make you hit deep sleep like 30 minutes after taking it (depending on how much food in yer tummy)

oh, and thanks to MrsSkoorb for the PMs about the procedure, was a real help!

is that laser eye correction?

if it is... do you have to stay awake during it? it must feel extreamly insecure. lol 🙂

Good luck! Break a leg... wait, lemme try that again... poke a eye out! 😛

heh, yeah you gotta stay awake... they put in anesthetic eye drops, but they want you all coherent and aware since you have to focus on a light while the laser is pulsing

the doc said i was the first one to ask him "what happens if i sneeze during the surgery" but i figured since that urban legend about closing yer eyes when you sneeze so yer eyeballs don't pop out may be true, was a valid question

the answer he gave was that there was going to be a suction thingy on the eye keeping it still, so even if it did happen, which he's never seen (and he's been performing the surgery since '91), the eye wouldn't shoot outta the socket or anything

If only all eye problems were so easily corrected. 🙂

Hope it works well for you, and that you don't have KC tendencies.

Yer having LASIK done tomorrow too? what's yer correction numbers? mine are -6 in the left eye and -4.75 in the right, which he said was near ideal... anything above or below those numbers and the chance of needing the surgery done again are a bit higher (like 10% higher than the norm, which is like 4% itself, but still)

Well, i'm also red/green colorblind... wish it would correct that crap too

is the laser gonna be like the kinda laser from a laser pointer.

If you've ever had a laser pointed in your eye, you know that's its extreamly unbearable.

Or is it the kind of laser that you dont even know is there?

Nice one, hah, great way to comfort him. Either way, good luck!

girl at work is -10.5 in both eyes, and would like to have the surgery done, but she has FLAT corneas... that's gotta be weird

actually it's an eximer laser, and the beam itself is cool. I used to work at Lexmark in a clean room where we used an eximer laser to ablate film that would eventually be put on the cartridges. What we actually burned were the ink holes and paths.

SO, i'm familiar w/ the laser itself (had to take MANY safety courses on it) and the sound it makes, etc. I'm not too worried about the laser itself, i watched a video of LASIK being performed, and the doc doing it put his hand under the laser and it just pulsed there and didn't like burn flesh away or anything... it's gotta be hella weak to make microscopic changes in a very weak tissue

Good luck Joemonkey. You're a braver man than I. I am -8 in both eyes.

Im -8.5 in both eyes. I pwn j00...😀

Im thinking about LASIK actually. Im tired of these glasses and contact bullsh!t

yeah, i'm 24 years old, and prescription hasn't changed in over 2 years... worn contacts for 12 years, and glasses for 5 years before that, and i am just SICK OF IT!!!

I figure the $3K will eventually be made up via not having to purchase glasses, contacts, contact solution, contact cases, etc. for the rest of my life... and getting rid of the aggravation of it is worth $10K easy

Joe,

I dont really want to do this. I want to back out. Im down $200 now, the balance will be paid tomorrow. The warnings scare the hell out of most people I know who have seen them.

Have you been practicing trying to take a shower without rubbing your eyes? You know you cant rub them for 3 months right?

yeah i know all about it... i was worried about the rubbing thing since i used to rub my eyes all the time, but since i've been wearing glasses for over a week in preparation for it, i haven't rubbed them at all really

and not being able to rub them for like a YEAR would still be way worth it to me

i want to be able to just GO TO BED if i want, not have to go to the bathroom, wash hands, clean and rinse and store contacts, put glasses on, go to bed, fall asleep w/ glasses on, roll over and hurt face cuz glasses are there...

the few months after its done are going to be a bitch, i agree, but WAY worth it IMHO

Funny you would say that, that's one of my biggest irritations with contacts. I dunno how many nights I have delayed going to bed because I did NOT want to deal with my contacts.

Unfortunately for me glasses do me no good, so when the contacts come out I'm finger counting blind until they go back in.

yeah, i used to just sleep in them if i was out drinking at some friend's house, but waking up in them after drinking and being all dehydrated is no fun either, and i know its not good for the eyes

it's true they don't know the side effects of LASIK past 20 years really, but what about long term contact lens wear too? I wore them for 12 years, and the doc could see callous type places on my cornea from just wearing them that long

geez, I dont think Id have the willpower to go three months without some rubbage. I always seem to get dust or eyelashes in my eyes.

Im making out a schedule tonight to time the medications correctly (so I can have this crap ready for tommorrow). I figure Im going to be home all weekend!

A word of advice, ask the doc to double-check the machine while you watch. I've seen the horror that happens when the doc starts the surgery after the tech before him left a laser filter out.
