I just ate some shit from the boss that I should be here at 8:30.
At all previous workplaces, it seemed like showing up around 9 was just fine
This is a typical corporate environment

Yea, that's what they want. When you get your paycheck say "Only 40 hours! How come I wasn't paid for 43!?".

IMO 9 is perfectly fine; 10 is definitely pushing it; 11 begs the question, "were you in an accident?"

errr - since when does your previous workplace set the precedent for your current employment?

if your boss wants you there at 8:30, you're supposed to be there at 8:30. if he doesn't care that you come in at 9, then come in at nine. the key here, is that HE'S YOUR BOSS.

Can't say it much better than this.

I assume the start time is at 9, and the boss wants a free 1/2 hour. That's complete bullshit. If that's not the case, then come in at 8:30. What's the difference.

If work starts at 8:30, then you are 30 minutes late. Unless stated by your boss, you don't have flexible hours

Guess what shit-for-brains? You don't make your own hours. You work for someone else. Be there on time, or you face the consequences.

Well I get paid OT, but if you're salary and that's the case, I'd be pissed too. That's when you do an extra half hour of internet browsing on the clock.

I was in 2 hours late today, but I also worked a 14 hour shift on Saturday, so fuck if I feel guilty. I'll probably go home on time too.

Depends what your job is. For a software engineer, yeah. I can understand that attitude. For a consultant? No, that attitude does not fly. Nothing is worse than missing a client call during business hours because you are not at your desk.

I mean, really? Figure out what hours you're expected to be there and do it. The expectation for my department is that you must be here for the core hours 9a-3p. Beyond that, put in your 8 hours however you like...but most are here by 8. I do 7:30a-4p usually.

I have no idea why this is even a discussion.

What are you, 13?

Hours are hours. If they're flexible, you'll know about it. If not, then be on time.

Years ago, I had a job that started at 0800. I'd get there at 0755. The boss told me they liked getting there at 0730 and having coffee. At the time, I didn't drink coffee. I told him they ought to do that then.

if he wants you in at 8:30 then leave at 4:30

if he wants to get a free half hour out of you then find a better job

I figure 8am is normal start time and the company is being pretty cool if you allowed to come in at 9. 9 has always been my target start time personally, if the company doesn't mind. I'm working from home these days doing a lot of 6am calls. :( I've worked other jobs where my start time was 10 or 11am, but I was also working 80+ hour weeks on those jobs.
