I've always been told that getting drunk was a huge setback in any fitness program. Is it really so bad to have a night out and get a little drunk once a week or so? How much, if any harm does it do?

I can't imagine once a week would have much of an impact beyond the fact that you will be probably consuming more calories than normal.

Once a week seems excessive to me. Maybe because I treat my body right. I probably have eaten fast food under 15X this year. I definitely will not be poisoning my body with alcohol. Just my opinion.

Depends entirely on what and how much you drink to get drunk. For example the calories of the Dogfish Head 60, 90, and 120 minute IPAs are 209/294/450. That's not even looking at carbs or sugars.

If you're on a weight-loss plan you'd really have to pay attention to what and how much you drink.

Well once a week is a little much, just giving a hypothetical time frame.

Right, the excess calories are bad. I was talking more of a physical set back due to drinking, just in general.

Depends. Drinking can be a huge addition of calories, so if you're trying to lose weight, drinking can really hamper your progress.

Define a little drunk. If you aren't drinking to the point of getting a hangover the next morning I'd think you are probably OK. If you are, then it would obviously be harmful to your health & fitness.

When I drink I eat like a starving man so for me it puts progress back significantly. I have, however, gotten very lean drinking once/week with the other 6 days extremely diligent, though honest to God in the last year losing weight has become much slower and I'm not sure why (31 years old). I stopped drinking last year fwiw.

Alcohol (without getting drunk) can severely affect recovery time and many other things. The following bullets are the most destructive:

-Hinders protein synthesis that is required for muscle healing and recovery.
-Acts as a diuretic, resulting in slight to moderate dehydration. This hinders cell processes (ATP synthesis and many more) and electrolytic balance.
-Competes with lactate (the result of anaerobic glycolysis, a metabolic pathway that is often used in lifting and always in cardio) for NAD+... and wins. Therefore while there's alcohol in your system, your soreness will be heavy and your recovery will be slowed.
-Not to mention, getting drunk is a toxic level to your body, killing neurons and wreaking all kinds of other havoc on your body that doesn't have to relate to fitness.

That's not even mentioning calories, etc. If you want to be a real athlete, alcohol will hinder your goals. It's as simple as that. I've taken classes on bioenergetics, metabolism, etc and alcohol screws with stuff in the body every time.

That's not correct. Alcohol acts on so many different pathways. Even "a little drunk" is to the point that your body's recovery is pretty damn inhibited.

I will miss you alcohol. :(

Right. I don't plan on not drinking ever, I was just wanted to know how much harm I would be doing. Honestly I don't drink very often typically less than once a month, although it's been a little more lately.

SC thanks for your input, that is exactly what I was wanting to know. What are you majoring in that has you take all these classes?

Exercise biology. I pay special attention to stuff that applies to both exercise and nutrition so I can be well-informed on what's going on in my body.

A little off topic here, but I noticed you said "although it's been a little more lately". Those are some very dangerous words right there. It's very easy for once/month to turn into once/week and then once/day. Just FYI. Sorry to go off topic.

Haha no, it's nothing like that, just went out one night and visited a friend out of town and had a little to drink. For a single guy @ 24 in a college town I'm well below par. But from here out I plan on no more than once a month although it's no requirement and it's not like I count down the days until I can drink again. Going 5-6 months without a drink is fine with me.

Thanks for the concern tho :)
