Getting crazy i5-760 temperature readings...

I just had my computer assembled by my friend today (who also just built one that is working fine) and I was lagging while playing Starcraft 2 using ultra graphics settings. My specs are..

Intel Core i5-760
8GB G-Skill ripjaws memory
MSI Geforce GTX 460 Hawk
MSI P55M-GD41

I started downloading programs to check my temps, and using three different programs they all read pretty much the same thing. At idle (while typing this) the 4 cores are reading 48-54 degrees celcius. I have no idea if that is high or not I can't find any official figures.

I ran sc2 on my tv linked via HDMI and monitored the temps and they all jumped to 99 (the max value?) celcius and while watching my 4v4 replay it was very laggy. I used another program and did it again, temperatures jumped to 99c.

Frys told me the box was opened when I bought it, didn't say if it was used or refurbished, but I still can return/exchange it.

Are there any other factors or settings that may be pushing my temps so high? The video card remains steady at about 35-37 degrees celcius

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

- Matt

Are you on the stock heatsink? Those temps are typical of the stock HS. A good 3rd party cooler should bring it down some 20c.

^ For stock speed & voltage, those are high even for the Intel heatsink. OP should check it is seated properly with all push-pins fully locked in place. Also make sure power-saving states are enabled in BIOS.

Even if he's using a stock HS, there's no way that the chip should be getting up to 99 degrees. 99 is definitely not typical. I'd guess that the HSF is installed incorrectly or the case airflow is more or less non-existent. The video card temps are also strange, but strangely low; I have a 460 and it gets up to the mid-60s playing SC2. Perhaps the CPU is throttling itself so badly due to the overheating that the video card never even gets up to speed.

Wow, didnt see that 99, saw "48-54 degrees celcius". Something is definitely wrong at 99. Check the pins to make sure they're all in, that HS in all likelihood is not making contact.

You said your CPU was open box. Did the cooler have thermal compound still on it? Did it look used?

Your idle temps are far too high. My idle temps are 23C-26C with an overlocked i5 750. I only have a $40 Zalman cooler on mine, but even before with the stock cooler temps were only around 32C-35C idle. I would suggest you invest in a aftermarket cooler asap.

It did not look used there was not any dust on it either. I'll re-install the heat sink again and run the tests. If nothing happens I'll exchange my cpu for a new one and come back with the results

For now all the fan are working

I was seeing something like this on my last build. Do the temps go up with the case closed? Or down with it open? My issue had to do with the HSF getting messed up when I tried to close the case, as the side panel had clips for a fan. It was either pulling off the HSF, or stopping the fans from spinning. Not sure what exactly was going on, as I immediately modded the side panel to remove the clips and everything was right as rain.

Hey guys I re-installed the heat sink and now I idle around 25-33c which is much better than yesterday. Also I ran the same 4v4 sc2 replay and it got to around 49c which is what I idled at yesterday.

Everything seemed good again and I was happy but I ran the Unigine Heaven demo from the Nvidia website and my computer started making beeping noises (i'm told thats bad). I checked the temperatures again and the cpu was at 39-40c and graphics card was at 45c which are both normal temps.

SC2 in ultra settings was smooth so now my only concern is the beeping

^ Yes, temps look good now - just what they should be. Hope you solve the beeping - could be a setting in the BIOS or some sort of monitoring app.

I took my pc to my friends house and ran the same stuff that made my pc beep... and it automagically disappeared.

Computers are confusing

Now you have to remove that heatsink, get something like the Coolermaster 212 and OC it to 4Ghz. There is a vid on Youtube about this and it looks easy as pie. Waiting on my cooler to arrive to do just that.

Why on Earth would you tell him to OC when he can't even get his computer to function properly?

Yes. Actually it still beeps when I'm playing sc2 but not all the time. It seems to do it randomly whether or not there are a lot of units or little

Temperatures are still normal around 50-55 each core and 45-50 gpu so I can't figure out the beeping. It's not like constant where it bugs me it seems to go away after it beeps for a few seconds... but beeping can't be normal..

What does your motherboard documentation say about the "beep codes?"

It looks like you have an AMI BIOS. Here's what I found on the MSI forums:

AMI BIOS:
1 beep - System boot successfull
*1beep - Refresh failure - (NO VIDEO) memory refresh failure (bad memory)
2 beeps - Parity error - bad memory
3 beeps - Base 64K memory failure - bad memory
4 beeps - Timer not operational - bad motherboard
5 beeps - Processor error - bad processor
6 beeps - 8042 gate A20 failure - bad cpu or mainboard
7 beeps - Processor exception interput error - bad processor
8 beeps - Display memory read/write failure - bad video card or memory
9 beeps - ROM checksum error - bad BIOS
10 beeps - CMOS shutdown register read/write error - bad motherboard
11 beeps - Cache memory bad - bad CPU or motherboard
12 beeps - BIOS rom file incorrect size - The BIOS ROM file found does not match the size of the flash device
13 beeps - BIOS rom image mismatch - The BIOS ROM file layout configuration does not match image present in the flash device
5 short + 1 long beeps - Memory error - No memory detected in the memory slots.
6 short + 1 long beeps - Memory error - EDO memory detected in system
7 short + 1 long beeps - SMBUS error

Maybe knowing why it's beeping will help you to figure out what's wrong.

I know your problem was mostly resolved, but check to see if you're using your most recent version of the BIOS. I had a MSI P55 board too and it would give me funky temperature readings (due to the power management not being enabled), as well as turbo mode not functioning because it was on some A01 rev bios when I got it.

I also have random beeps on my Gigabyte P55 board. Found out that it was related to C3/C6/C7 Support State which if disabled in the bios, the beeps will go away. Of course if you disable that, it will also disable turbo boost. I just learned to live with the beeps, not that they're frequent or bothersome. Not sure if this is common to all p55 boards or not, I just know that it was reported a lot in the Gigabyte forums.

There doesn't seem to be any pattern at all. Sometimes it beeps once, sometimes 2.. it literally just beeped like 15 times a minute after I stopped playing sc2. First time that has happened.. lol

Usually it is only one or two or a few beeps at a time. I'm running the Nvidia Demos from their website and it didn't beep at all during the supersonic sled "game". If there was a problem wouldn't it constantly be like 2 beeps, then 2 beeps, then 2 beeps alerting me its bad memory? It comes and goes.

Thats way different than my beeps which happen like once or twice and hour. I would check with MSI forums where they may be aware of something like that.
