its really important to get a colonoscopy esp. given the diet of most americans. digestive system cancers are highly curable if caught early at the precancerous stage but really painful and deadly if not. ive had relatives get colon cancer (who were cured but never regained their strength) and it would have been alot easier and less painful to have gotten a colonoscopy ever few years than to have had a section of their gut removed.

Every 5 years and definitely sedated. My first one was nonsedated. No need to repeat that.D: Now I go to sleep before they even insert the thing and wake up feeling happy (if somewhat disconnected) for 3 hours. :)

I have a husband over 35 and everything he has been told or I have ever read says symptomless men should have a colonoscopy every 10 years beginning at age 50.
Do you have one under 35, too?

kidding.

50? 3 years to go. Maybe I'll mention Al Qaeda next time I'm in D.C. Might get one for free.

OP, I'm not certain they're going to put you completely out. Both times I was told that was not their intent and they even had the monitor set up so I could view it. Having said that, I nodded off both times and I didn't see a thing.

I believe that for colonoscopies they give you a painkiller and conscious sedation. You're not completely unconscious like with general anesthesia, but you are pretty out of it and generally can't remember what happened, sort of like being extremely drunk.

First one at 50 - came out with no issues.

Wife was there to ensure that I was properly taken care of.

There seems to be a gaping hole in OP's story. What are the doctors looking for?

Is this being paid for by health insurance or do they just expect you to pull the money out of your ass?

If you're not anal about paying your bills they could go into arrears, y'know...

Had one when I was a kid, idunno like 12 or something. I was shitting out a lot of blood at the time and the doc just wanted to take a look see and make sure everything was ok.

Shitting out all that white crap they pumped into me was by far worse than the actual "insertion".

I had one done a few months ago. Whatever you do, do not use the flavor packets they give you. It makes it taste even worse.

I was asking the anesthesiologist what he was going to use to knock me out and he said Propofol. I asked him if that was the drug that MJ used when he died and he said yes. He said it's pretty powerful stuff and will take about 10 seconds to make you unconscious. I remember him counting to 2 and next thing I know it was 1.5 hours later. It's some powerful stuff.

Fourthed...

Oh, by the way OP, see if you can get the tablet form of the conentrate now. My last colonoscopy I was able to switch to the tabs instead of the gallon of "Oh-God-I-Want-To-Die" drink and it was much much better.

The only thing is that once you stop taking the tabs at around 10pm or so the night before the operation, the stuff continues to work it's "magic" on into the night...I must have hit the porcelain throne 4 or more times between 10pm and 6am when I had to get up and head to the hospital.

The tablets are a godsend...can't say enough about them.

When I went in for my wisdom teeth, I remember saying the breathing mask was a little off, the surgeon put it back in place, said "how's that", and I didn't even get to answer.

I'll be asleep so it doesn't really count.

weird. They shouldn't be putting you to sleep. Versed + the other (I forget) is enough for the scope. I got to watch mine live. :D

Also, Colonoscopy is going the way of the dodo.

It tastes so bad that you will want to vomit, considering you have to drink like a ridiculous amount. Water will not cut the taste at all.

You mix the huge jug they give you with water to begin with... I basically chased it with gatorade.

yeah, the Go-Lightly is disgusting, but mostly from the shear amount. I just used crystal light to mix with it.

That night is insane though--you'll feel 10 lbs lighter. :D

and the gigantic release of gas a few hours after the procedure is...amazing.

It's not the first, it wont be the last.

<--- Only 27 but have had a prostate exam. Sorry bro :(

Had a prostate exam when I was 18. That + a few other events around that time, was when I began feeling like I was becoming an old man. o_O

I didn't think it tastes bad. Just way too much of it to gram down your throat in a short amount of time. that just makes you somewhat nauseated after a while.

These guidelines are put out by health insurers who have a vested interest in keeping down costs. More and younger is always better medically. Financially is another story.
