I did a search on UMBNA and I get everythign but a bank. I called him up again to make sure the name and she conferms it as UMBNA out of MO. I am here in IN and need to cash it. I dont have a bank account and please dont suggest it because they will not give me a account (I was a bad boy but had to do what I had to do or we would of been homeless). Curency exchange is out because they want 3-5% and thats going to take a good chunk.

So any one here have search skilz and can find or locate me a branch in Hammond, IN so I dont need to make a road trip to MO :D

They do, but they take a cut from the check, which is something the OP wants to avoid.

I know you aren't looking to hear this, but why can't you just start an account, using the check as your initial deposit? I've never heard of a bank refusing to open an account based on the person's credit - it's not as though they have anything to lose.

I know MBNA is the company that finances for Dell and Gateway. Never heard of UMNBA though. Maybe a subsidary?

????

I was told the check has UMBNA on it. There is a credit card company under MBNA but I cant find anything under UMBNA. I may just have to wait till I have the check in hand I suppose and see if she missed something on it.

All checks have a routing number on them. You can find the bank by that number.

You have your ex wifes kids right?

Ask her to deposit it and give you the money.

That is if you can trust her

The check may be cashable at a different bank that is local. My payroll checks are from a bank in north carolina, but it's cashable at any wells fargo.

once you get the check, try calling the issuing bank to see how you can redeem it without extra fees.

If you have a friend that you trust and that trusts you, you might be able to sign it over to him/her for cashing using their bank.

It's no doubt the bank that DeadbyDawn posted the link to.

To verify, go here and enter the routing number of the check to make sure it verifies back to UMB.

Easiest method: Look at the routing numbers on the bottom of the check, Google search a 9 or 10 digit routing number (which appears before or after the account number). You should find the correct bank's name and location that way. Then call and ask if they have any nearby locations.

Or post the routing number here and I'll look for you.

Thanks guys I will try the routing number as soon as I get it and hope I dont have too much of a trip. Even if I have to drive to MO to cash it it will be less in gas then what the curency exchange will take out :)

So you don't even have the check in your possesion yet?

I'd ask them to send a USPS money order -or- wire transfer, it's faster and 10x more convenient.

USPS will only cash up to $1,000 IIRC, and since it looks like he'll be getting more than that (he says gas money to MO < 3-5% of the check) a Western Union money transfer or something of the kind would be the most effective.
Another thing you can do is find a friend with a bank account and go with him to the bank and endorse the check over to him, then ask him to cash it for you. Make sure you trust him though. Also, you must go with him. Most banks will not cash double-endorsed checks without both parties present (and with ID).
